POSITION DESCRIPTION

CLASS TITLE: Park Technician - Forestry GR: 104 DATE: 01/23/2024

DEPARTMENT: Parks & Recreation DIVISION: Parks & Forestry FLSA: Non-Exempt

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Under general supervision; trims trees on city streets, rights-of-way, and certain alleyways; maintains

equipment used in such activity. Work is of some complexity requiring individual judgment within

prescribed standards and procedures.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

o Trims trees in parks and rights-of-way using chainsaws, manual saws, man-lift trucks, and vehicles.

o Operates tractors and attachments such as medium-sized loaders, skid steers, and other

equipment.

o Performs routine preventative equipment maintenance and safety inspections; services and

performs minor repairs to equipment including chain saws, pole saws, chippers, and blowers.

o Leads work crews and maintains records of activities and routine operational records; assists other

staff as necessary; interacts with the public.

o Works on special projects and assignments.

o Responds to weather and other emergencies.

o Performs overtime as required and other duties as assigned; works varied schedule including

potential nights, weekends, and/or holidays.

SUPERVISION - RESPONSIBILITY FOR WORK OF OTHERS:

Leads small group of workers in field work as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to the following:

o High school diploma or G.E.D.

o One (1) year work experience in the areas of general tree trimming or tree removal.

o Must possess a valid Kansas drivers license.

None.

Apply and maintain knowledge of the current methods, equipment, materials and tools to effectively

maintain and care for trees. (Daily)

Apply and maintain working knowledge of the methods, techniques, materials, and tools used in forestry

maintenance and repair. (Daily)

Understand and apply principles/practices relating to safe equipment operation and maintenance.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Work Type: Heavy, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds frequently,

and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Climbing/Balancing: Climbs inclines and uneven surfaces, balance required.

Walking: Extensive amount required.

Stooping/Bending: Frequently.

Stand/Sit: Sit about 20 percent of the time.

Reaching: Frequent, overhead as well as horizontal.

Vision: Adequate to perform essential functions.

Color Vision: Adequate to perform essential functions.

Hearing: Adequate to perform essential functions.

Speech: Moderate need to express ideas and be understood.

Eye/Hand/Foot Coordination: Frequently operates vehicles, equipment and tools requiring

moderate ability.

Manual Dexterity: Frequently operates equipment and tools requiring manual ability.

Inside/Outside: Work inside and outside (primarily outside).

Cold/Heat: Adverse conditions possible.

Wet/Dry: Adverse conditions possible.

Noise/Vibrations: Equipment noise.

Haz ards: Equipment, vehicles, sharp objects and height.

Fumes/Dust/Odors: Frequent exposure to dust; occasional exposure to fumes and odors.

Infectious Diseases: Moderate exposure.

Ability to read and comprehend technically-written material.

MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT AND WORK AIDS USED:

Backhoe, chain saw, chipper, dump truck, grapple truck, hand & power tools, man-lift, stump grinder,

tractors with attachments, & vehicles.
