Job Summary

The Safety Officer promotes and implements Superior Paving's safety program by conducting training, informing employees on prevention procedures and policies, inspecting jobsites, staying informed of regulations, and championing our Superior culture of safety.

Responsibilities/Duties

Job Duties

  • Routinely visit jobsites, plants, shops and other facilities as required.

  • Respond to on-call emergencies.

  • Maintain current knowledge of OSHA, VOSH, FHWA, VDOT and state fire marshal safety regulation. Conduct inspections to ensure compliance with these agencies.

  • Assist Safety Director with training personnel on safety and compliance procedures.

  • Investigate accidents, compile and analyze data, make recommendations to prevent accidents.

  • Instruct personnel in emergency procedures.

  • Attend safety meetings and weekly operations meetings.

  • Regularly conduct and document safety meetings with field and corporate employees.

  • Inspect work zones and provide written documentation of such inspections and file appropriate reports.

  • Perform random drug and alcohol testing of non-CDL employees.

  • Educate supervisors and employees on the drug and alcohol testing policy and procedures.

  • Maintain records and assist with annual training (CPR, first-aid, work zone traffic control) or any other classes pertinent to operations.

  • Maintain statistical reports as instructed by Safety Director.

  • Regularly conduct and document DEQ inspection of plant facilities to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.

  • Regularly conduct and document nuclear safety inspections to ensure compliance with NRC and VA DOH regulations.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills

Job Requirements

  • HS Diploma or equivalency preferred with two years of safety-related experience.

  • Ability to work a flexible regular and on-call schedule that includes shift rotation and weekends.

  • Good communications skills with the ability to be assertive to enforce necessary policies.

  • Ability to utilize basic computer skills, including working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook.

  • Thorough knowledge of Superior Paving's Drug and Alcohol Testing policy and procedures.

  • Thorough knowledge of work zone traffic safety rules and regulations.

  • Thorough knowledge of federal rules and regulations.

  • Working knowledge of human resources management as it relates to compliance and confidentiality in the responsible areas listed above.

  • Valid driver license with satisfactory driving record.

  • Working knowledge of workers compensation reporting procedures

  • Ability to provide accurate and appropriate information to outside vendors and agencies (insurance, VDOT, etc.)

  • Ability to read, write and speak English.
