U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Maintenance Mechanic in Saint Louis, Missouri

Summary About the Position: Serves as a Maintenance Mechanic and performs a variety of maintenance and repair functions at the Service Base. Responsibilities Uses a variety of electric arc processes. Performs as a heavy equipment operator of engineering and construction equipment, including but not limited to: bulldozers, graders, backhoes, trench diggers and front-end loaders. Utilizes established work orders, schedules, and standing verbal or written instructions to direct maintenance personnel to perform their duties. Assists in the maintenance and modifications of boats, barges and other floating plant. Prepares surfaces for painting, sandblasts and applies paint. Performs deckhand duties for harbor work primarily between the riverbank and floating plant. Makes minor repairs to engines and mechanical equipment on floating plant, diesel, marine, and stationary engines, and heavy equipment such as crawler tractors and draglines. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Maintenance Mechanic without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common maintenance and repair tasks which includes operating a variety of heavy equipment; utilizing welding techniques to repair new or existing parts to floating, stationary, or mobile machinery equipment; and performing, planning, and/or preparing routine services of equipment and floating plant to ensure compliance for in-progress and/or final work. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Screen Out Ability to Drive Safely (Motor Vehicles) Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) PHYSICAL EFFORT: The work involves standing, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and crawling. Work may be done in awkward and cramped positions. Frequently handles objects weighing from 20 to 50 pounds and, occasionally lifts objects weighing in excess of 50 pounds when setting up work and equipment, and when completing assignments. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is done indoors and outdoors, sometimes in bad weather. Work involves exposure to fumes, infrared and ultraviolet radiation, heat, cold, flying sparks, glare of torches and heated materials, possibility of eye injuries, electrical shock, burns, cuts, bruises, and sprains. Works on parts or systems which are dirty, oily, or greasy. Subject to drowning when working from boats. Subject to snake bites. Subject to hot, cold and inclement weather when working on a vessel and during field repairs. Subject to the motion of the vessel, and to the possibility of drowning when working on a floating vessel. Employees live in various locations in Missouri and Illinois. Commuting times vary, but are generally no more than 45 minutes one way. Transportation subsidies are available for mass transit users.
