Minimum Starting Pay: 23.86 (Offers are based on years of experience and equity for this role.)

Shift Differentials: Evenings-1.50, Nights-2.25, Weekends 2.15

Job Summary:

The Pharmacy Technician will assist the registered pharmacist in providing pharmaceutical services through the execution of the essential operational and clinical responsibilities of the pharmacists to provide safe and quality patient care. Will work with the registered pharmacist to ensure the department is run efficiently and in accordance with the department’s philosophies, goals, and objectives. He/she will be responsible for technician scheduling and monitoring of technician performance.

Job Responsibilities and Requirements:

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES AND PERFORMANCE CRITERIA (% of Time)

Essential Functions: The Following are essential job accountabilities and performance criteria:

Position Accountabilities

1) Follows necessary departmental policies and procedures to perform all job related responsibilities with accuracy and efficiency. 25%

Criteria

A) Demonstrates proficiency in the selection of appropriate drug, strength, quantity, and form of administration when performing all job related responsibilities. These responsibilities include:

  1. Proficiency/accuracy in filling oral and topical medications.
  • Filling of patient-specific unit-dose medications.

  • Filling/exchanging pyxis medication loads, unloads, and refills.

  • Packaging of extemporaneous unit doses of tablets, capsules, and liquids using the proper equipment.

  • Pending/Loading/Filling/Unloading medication in pyxis.

  1. Proficiency/accuracy in charging/crediting of patient-specific medications.
  • Charging and crediting medications to the correct patient account, right number or doses within the 3 day window.

  • Recording medication units dispensed and/or returned.

  1. Proficiency/accuracy IV Admixture.
  • Set up and preparation of intravenous solutions, admixtures, hyperalimentation solutions, intravenous additives, and the preparation of chemotherapy agents by using aseptic techniques.
  1. Accuracy in assisting in Inventory Control.
  • Indicating medications needed to be reordered.

  • Restocking medications appropriately.

  • Removing discontinued or expired medications.

  • Replacement and removal of floor stock.

  1. General technician responsibilities.
  • Understanding the medication delivery system.

  • Maintaining a clean and organized dispensing area.

  • Accurate/timely delivery of medications to nursing/ancillary units.

  • Documentation of daily temperature logs.

  • Monthly floorstock inspections.

  • Delivery/documentation of all narcotic paperwork.

2) Assists a registered pharmacist in his/her day-to-day pharmaceutical care activities. 20%

Criteria

A) Answering basic questions on drugs, in person or over the phone. For example (questions that do not require interpretation of data):

  • Last refill date/time

  • Quantity dispensed

B) Gathering appropriate drug information to assist in a pharmacist’s clinical decision making process

C) Entering data into the Pharmacy Management System

3) Develops and maintains pharmacy technician services. 20%

Criteria

A) Prepares technician schedule equitably, timely, with adequate staffing, and avoiding excessive overtime.

B) Administers hospital policies fairly within the department.

C) Ensures all technicians are adequately trained in areas they are assigned.

D) Ensures all technicians receive departmental orientation and maintain yearly competency.

E) Provides leadership and guidance to staff in goal setting, problem solving, resource management and outcome achievement.

F) Evaluates technician performance fairly and objectively using documentation – yearly and 90 day evaluations – completed within the time frame outlined by Human Resources.

G) Works with pharmacy management to define performance objectives and metrics for the technicians and to assess the level of competence of staff in a timely manner.

H) Assists in departmental quality assessment activities.

4) Complies with appropriate regulatory and hospital requirements/policies. 20%

Criteria

A) Assures compliance with Missouri laws and regulations, JCAHO rules and regulations, and Saint Louis University Hospital/Department of Pharmacy Services policies and procedures. These include:

  • Dress Code

  • Absenteeism/tardiness

  • Current Professional licensure

  • Current Pharmacy Technician Certification

  • Completes all Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement monitoring

  • Completes all controlled substance records

5) Safety/Infection Control: Practices according to safety and infection control policies. 5% (1, 2, 3, 4,5)

Criteria

A) Practices universal precautions and disposes of hazardous wastes per established guidelines.

B) Maintains a safe, clean, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients/families/employees in accordance with hospital standards.

  1. Maintains clutter free environment.

  2. Keeps conversations and background noise to a minimum.

  3. Adheres to dress code.

C) Reports risk management concerns.

D) Assumes responsibility for completing all annual mandatory requirements:

  1. Safety/Fire

  2. Blood Borne Pathogen

  3. Hazardous Communication

  4. TB

  5. Department Specific

  6. Age Appropriate Care (for clinical staff only)

E) Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.

6) Service: Provides service excellence to the customers of Saint Louis University Hospital by delivering timely, high quality care in a courteous, and respectful manner. 5% (1, 2, 3, 4, 5)

A) Focused on monitoring a high level of customer satisfaction.

B) Be courteous and respectful to all.

7) Quality Improvement (QI): Incorporates Quality Assessment into one’s daily work. 5% (1, 2, 3, 4, 5)

Job Specifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION: High School diploma/GED or 10 years of work experience.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: Two years of relevant pharmacy technician or experience is preferred.

REQUIRED LICENSURE: Missouri Pharmacy Technician Registration.

WORKING CONDITIONS: The job of Pharmacy Technician requires processing work at a rapid pace, with frequent deadlines within and outside of the department.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Long periods of sitting, standing, stooping, bending, and walking are required with ability to safely lift up to 45 lbs. And push or pull up to 90 lbs.

EQUIPMENT: Meditech Information System and associated printers, personal computer, facsimile machine and copier, laminar flow hood/clean bench, IV pumps, epidural analgesia pumps, Pyxis medstations.
