Your Opportunity

Stantec’s Geotechnical and Materials Team is looking for an Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer to join our team in Saint John, New Brunswick. As a Geotechnical and Materials Engineer, you will have the opportunity to work on engineering projects in a multi-discipline project team environment. Working in our Saint John, New Brunswick office, in this role, the candidate will have opportunity to exercise their technical and interpersonal skills while growing in their career.

The role of an Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer is to work on smaller projects, and/or as a team member of a larger project under the guidance and supervision of a Senior Engineer. You will perform a variety of tasks which may include proposals, reporting, calculations, and field work. The projects that an Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer may be assigned to may be broad, varied, and diverse in scope.

You will work closely with an experienced team of engineers and technicians to become part of our dynamic team. Our team provides conventional and advanced field and laboratory testing services for soil, rock, aggregates, and concrete.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Working with a team of engineers and technologists/technicians performing general engineering responsibilities.

  • Working on a variety of small to large projects spanning from transportation, residential, commercial, and industrial developments.

  • Connecting with field staff working on field work and testing which may include borehole drilling, test pit supervision, construction site review, rock anchor testing, and slope stability assessments.

  • Installation and operation of instrumentation including piezometers, inclinometers, and other geotechnical instruments.

  • Management of geotechnical investigations, including field coordination with subcontractors, selection of laboratory testing, reviewing of soils and rock, documentation of the results, and budget management.

  • Engineering design and assessment of geological and/or geotechnical systems involving foundation design, slope stability and settlement analysis, soil improvement, and others.

  • Developing project scopes, budgets, staffing, and schedules for proposal preparation.

  • Prepare and write proposals and technical reports and memorandums.

  • Preparation and coordination of project specifications and construction documents.

  • Client management and interaction with clients.

  • Other general field and office related duties as required.

  • Planning and coordinating field and laboratory testing of construction materials.

  • Provision of Quality Control and Quality Assurance services.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • A self-starter who enjoys working in a team environment.

  • Strong technical skill set.

  • Working knowledge and application of the Canadian Engineering Foundation Manual and other pertinent codes relative to jurisdictions and developing jurisdictional experience and contacts.

  • Ability to participate and collaborate in a project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought.

  • Knowledge of technical software and current geotechnical software applications are an asset;

  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Valid Driver’s License.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Material or Geotechnical Engineering from a recognized university; a post-graduate degree would be an asset.Licensed Professional Engineer.

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience.

  • Professional Engineer in good standing with provincial association or the ability to obtain the professional designation.

  • Field work may involve traversing difficult terrain and include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Other work will be carried out in a typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time.
