The Revenue Strategy team is excited to announce the opening of this position. In this role, you will be part of a team of subject matter experts in load research, utility forecasting, pricing and data analytics. You will be proactively engaging with other peers, managers, directors and consultants across SMUD to analyze data relevant to load forecasting, distributed energy resources (DERs), customer programs and innovative rate designs. The team is responsible for the development and completion of SMUD's sales and long-term load forecasting scenarios and creating forecasting outlooks in support of the clean energy vision. Your work in this area plays a highly visible role in SMUD's 2030 Zero Carbon Plan. SMUD implemented a full roll out of advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) over a decade ago, you will have access to AMI load data using SAS and Metrix ND to perform analytical work. You will be developing regression models for energy demand, incorporate future DERs into the forecasting scenarios, and working closely with Pricing, Budget Office, Information Technology, Enterprise Strategy and Customer and Grid Strategy.

Purpose

Provide analysis and technical support for producing the customer, load and demand forecasts, load research and related assessment, and program evaluations.

Nature and Scope

This classification is comprised of two levels: Level "E" is the entry-level where incumbents are provided formal training and/or certification for progression to the journey-level of the classification. The incumbent is promoted/progressed to the journey level "J" upon successful completion of all training and/or certification requirements for the classification. Incumbents hired at the entry-level are required to successfully progress to the journey-level within 18 to 60 months, depending on the length of the training and/or certification program. If an employee is unsuccessful with progressing to the journey-level they will return to last class held or separate from SMUD.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists in developing long-term customer, load and demand forecasts, program evaluations, and load assessment.

  • Aids in design and development of databases to support load research and assessment.

  • Evaluates, procures and coordinates various analytical modeling tools to facilitate modeling and evaluation activities.

  • Supports the administration of internal/external projects by assisting in identifying project objectives; identifying internal/external project team within area of responsibility; assisting in the development of Request for Proposals where applicable; participating in developing project plans including schedule, cost, key work products, and milestones; monitoring project progress and completion in area of responsibility against plan/contract; monitoring and revising schedules, scope, expenditures and assignments as warranted; reviewing work products; assisting in resolving conflicts and discrepancies; maintaining project records and files; and participating in the overall review of the completed project results and making recommendations for next steps.

  • Learns to conduct technical analysis for other departments for their use in operations planning and power scheduling, contract negotiations, supply- and demand-side resource assessment, rate design, and financial planning.

  • Supports the analysis in the financial and market assessment of new products and services.

  • Learns to independently assess and provide recommendations on projects requiring significant capital commitments.

  • Reviews and oversees contract work performed by consultants on certain special projects.

  • Assists in developing and delivering technical and verbal reports to staff, peers, management, and the general public.

  • Performs other related duties as needed to include working outside of typical business hours when necessary.

Required Education

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university majoring in Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, or related field or equivalent experience. If no degree, 5 or more (5+) years of experience are required.

Required Experience Qualifications

One or more (1+) years of progressively responsible relevant work experience conducting load research, load modeling, forecasting, modeling and/or economic analysis.

Knowledge Of

Desirable Qualifications

  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university majoring in Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, or related field.

  • Knowledge of SMUD policies; operations related to generating, transmission and distribution resources.
