California Dental Association Controller in Sacramento, California

Remote first work environment with occasional in office meetings in Sacramento.

Salary Range: $131,900 - $171,300

Job Purpose 

The Controller is responsible for accounting operations, financial reporting, financial oversight, and related controls for CDA and all related companies: TDIC (insurance company), TDIC Insurance Solutions (insurance broker company), TDSC, Rotunda Partners (property management), CDA Foundation and CDA Holding Company.  The Controller reports to the VP, Finance and is a key member of the organization’s management team.  Working with business partners across the organization, the Controller provides financial insights and oversight of essential controls and processes.

Essential Functions – must be able to perform with or without a reasonable accommodation

  • Responsible for accurate and timely monthly financial statements, prepared in accordance with GAAP or statutory accounting guidance.  Perform detailed review of the monthly financial statements as prepared by the general ledger staff, including: reviewing all account reconciliations, journal entries, and financial statements. Review analysis of each company operating results; interpreting and applying GAAP; provide recommendations to VP, Finance based on statement analysis.

  • Responsible for accurate annual consolidated and standalone financial statements, prepared in accordance with GAAP or statutory accounting guidance, including all required schedules and footnotes.  Ensure accounting for new transactions and new accounting guidance are implemented appropriately, including performing research and making changes to processes, controls, reporting, or software, as necessary.

  • Responsible for designing and implementing an effective internal control environment to safeguard company assets, prevent fraud, monitor spending and ensure accurate financial reporting.

  • Responsible for all aspects of accounts payable and accounts receivable processes, ensuring these are performed completely, accurately, and efficiently.  Monitor and evaluate service levels and implement best practices to continuously improve quality and efficiency.

  • Coordinate and manage the interim and annual audit process for all CDA companies, subsidiaries and 401k.

  • Coordinate the tax filing for CDA and related entities, including: federal and state annual returns, arranging for the timely payment of quarterly income tax deposits, monthly/quarterly sales tax returns, annual property tax statements, business license filings and other related filings.  Review returns prepared by external CPA firm to ensure consistency with company financial records and accuracy of disclosures.

  • Responsible for all aspects of insurance operations accounting, including claims payments, electronic payment withdrawals, payment applications and sales commission tracking.  Monitor and evaluate processes and make recommendations for enhancements where necessary to ensure completeness and accuracy of payment processing.

  • Administer corporate treasury functions, including setup and maintenance of bank, investment, merchant and credit card accounts, processing cash and investment transfers, monitoring investment policy compliance, and managing cash balances.

  • Manage the Operations and General Ledger staff including: interviewing, selecting, training, developing, supervising, evaluating, and counseling staff within area of responsibility.  Staff responsibilities include general ledger and operations functions, which include all accounts receivable and accounts payable related functions. In charge of Finance Department during absences of VP, Finance and CFO.

  • In partnership with human resources, provide oversight and review for bi-monthly payroll runs, payroll tax compliance, and employee 401k and benefit deductions.  Monitor and evaluate processes and make recommendations for enhancements where necessary to ensure payroll and benefit accuracy and regulatory compliance.

  • Prepare reports which summarize and forecast company business activity and financial position in areas of cash balances, income, expenses, and earnings based on past, present, and expected operations. Assist CFO and VP, Finance on providing meaningful business analysis, identify key business issues and develop analytical models to quantify and report on those issues.  This will include the creation and automation of reports.

  • Responsible for the maintenance of financial software, including the general ledger accounting system and all interfaces from other core software systems throughout the organization.  This includes maintaining the allocations within the general ledger that are vital to a successful monthly close process.

  • Assist in the preparation and maintenance of the annual budgets, business and profit plans, operating forecasts, and financial plans.

  • Review, analyze, prepare, and report recommendations regarding the financial impact of major purchases, business opportunities, compensation plans, capital expenditures, and other identified areas.

  • Ensure expected customer service levels are maintained during project implementations, staff absences/leaves and during peak workload situations.

  • Establish procedures, prepare and coordinate schedules, and expedite workflow.

    Required Education, Licenses & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) required. 

  • 8-10 years related experience or equivalent. 

  • Thorough understanding of GAAP accounting.

  • Working knowledge of for-profit and nonprofit organizations.  

  • Commitment to excellence and high standards.

    Preferred Education, Licenses & Experience

  • MBA or CPA desirable. 

  • Insurance industry experience desirable.

  • Software implementation experience desirable.
