Weyerhaeuser Research Coordinator in Ruston, Louisiana

Weyerhaeuser is searching for a Research Progeny Test Coordinator to join our Tree Improvement team in Ruston, LA. As a Research Progeny Test Coordinator, your primary responsibility involves coordinating the establishment and management of all genetic field tests in your assigned area of responsibility. This position is part of Weyerhaeuser's Strategy & Technology (S&T) business and reports to the Southern Tree Improvement Manager.

Additionally, you may work with key scientists and project leaders across all S&T disciplines. Strong communication and coordination are required with scientists and the entire team to ensure seedlings are grown to spec, field test sites are properly selected, sites prepared, established, maintained, measured, and documented.Youwill be able to conduct research on various aspects of silviculture, tree genetics, tree physiology, plant pathology and plant health. Your success in this role will include having a strong understanding of tree improvement and southern pine silviculture, and possessing the ability to recognize opportunities for research and operational improvement.

This is an individual contributor role responsible for transferring technological information in a clear and concise manner to managers (S&T and Southern Regeneration), early- and mid-rotation foresters, and other relevant parties.This transfer of information may be in the form of group presentations, field tours, and written reports. In addition to formal research activities, you will be expected to stay abreast of current science, to understand operational practices, and to recognize research needs and challenges as they arise.

Essential Job Functions

  • Coordinate the establishment and management of all genetic field tests primarily in assigned region, but also across multiple disciplines within the S&T organization, other regions as necessary, and the business
  • Plan and execute field work including site selection, study installation, maintenance, measurements, data audits and treatment application according to workplans
  • Contract administration for different research projects
  • Conduct research on various aspects of silviculture, tree genetics, tree physiology, plant pathology and plant health related to genetics as needed
  • Manage cooperative membership progeny testing obligations
  • Coordinate research activities with other members of S&T as well as area foresters
  • Assist scientists with the transfer of information and technology and help troubleshoot technology implementation
  • Perform data analysis, summarization, and tech reports covering various aspects of progeny test and research results

Equipment Used to Perform the Job & Frequency of Use

  • Various field and greenhouse equipment on a daily basis
  • Various software including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook on a daily basis
  • LiCor 6800 and other plant physiology equipment, general laboratory equipment, UTV, media mixing equipment, track carrier, as needed

  • Bachelors degree (or higher) in Tree Improvement, Forestry, or a closely related field

  • Good understanding of genetics and tree improvement, experimental design and the importance of data quality
  • Basic understanding of a broad range of core competencies including plantation nutrition, tree physiology, soils, growth and yield, and silvicultural systems
  • Field forestry experience
  • Contract administration experience (both preparing contracts and managing the contractor)
  • Committed safety mindset, focused on safely executing work every day and supporting the company safety vision
  • Ability to work alone safely, often in remote areas, prepared to do field intensive work
  • Knowledgeable of and licensed in the use of herbicide, pesticide, and fertilizer application (or the ability to obtain a Pesticide Applicator’s license)
  • Willing and able to travel up to 50% of the time, sometimes 1-2 weeks at a time often requiring irregular work hours. Travel includes driving on highways, in-town, rural areas and on gravel/dirt roads across the various tree farms
  • Ability to tow a trailer and obtain DOT certification
  • Ability to fulfill essential functions of the role, which may include crouching, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying up to 50 pounds, and repetitive activities such as entering data and sample preparation
  • Ability to work both indoors and outdoors with exposure to a variety of weather conditions and on uneven working surfaces
  • Flexible availability regarding days and hours of work during seasonal activities
  • Excellent computer skills including a working knowledge of MS Office and GIS applications.
  • Proficient in the use of statistical tools and software such as ASReml, R or SAS a plus
  • Strong math, analytical and financial analysis skills including, but not limited to interpreting research data and genetic analyses
  • Good communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively across technical disciplines and work well in team situations
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines
  • Proactive problem-solving skills

What We Offer

Compensation:This role is eligible for our annual merit-increase program, and we are targeting a salary range of $66,703 - $100,055 based on your level of skills, qualifications and experience. You will also be eligible for our Annual Incentive Program, which offers a cash bonus targeting 5% of base pay. Potential plan funding may range from zero to two times that target.

Paid Time Off or Vacation:We provide eligible employees who are scheduled to work 25 hours or more per week with 3-weeks of paid vacation to use during your first year of employment. In addition, after being employed for six months, eligible employees begin to accrue vacation for future use. We also recognize eleven paid holidays per year, providing a total of 88 holiday hours
