Indian Health Service Medical Technician in Rosebud, South Dakota
Summary This position is located in the Branch of Laboratory Services, Division of Clinical Services at Rosebud Service Unit in the Great Plains Area. The position is responsible for the application, modification and adaptation of analytical methods and procedures in the performance of a variety tests/examinations of human tissue, fluids and/or other substances in the clinical laboratory. Responsibilities Performance of standardized procedures in accordance with established methodology manuals, technical references and precedents. Performance of non-standardized procedures involve the use of methods, techniques, instructions or other processes or actions. Performance of laboratory procedures which involve implementing new methods by performing, evaluating and modifying methods not currently carried out in the laboratory. Withdraw appropriate quanitites of blood by vein punctures and capillary puncture. Prepare solutions, stains, reagents and media require for the conduct of tests/examinations. Qualifications To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Individual Occupational Requirements Specialized Experience For positions at GS-4 and above: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. OR Education and Training For GS-4: Successful completion of (a) an associate-degree course of study of which the 2nd year of the 2-year program included successful completion of a training course of approximately a year's duration in a certified laboratory assistant school approved by a nationally recognized accrediting agency; (b) 1 year of study that included 6 semester hours in chemistry and/or the biological sciences, plus successful completion of the training course as described in (a) above for GS-3; or (c) 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours of chemistry and/or biological science course work that must have been directly related to the specialization of the position to be filled. For GS-5: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects appropriate to the position to be filled. In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: GS-4: Six (6) months of General Experience AND six (6) months of Specialized Experience AND/OR two (2) years above high school with courses related to the occupation, if required. GS-5: One (1) year of Specialized Experience equivalent to at least GS-4 grade level AND/OR four (4) year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation, if required. GS-6: One (1) year of Specialized Experience equivalent to at least GS-5 grade level Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Examples of Specialized Experience GS-4: Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations; set up collection trays with supplies necessary for collection of blood and other specimens. GS-5: Perform standardized tests and examinations; follow written procedures in providing instructions on each step of the assigned test and examination including the techniques, procedures, stains, reagents, chemicals, temperatures, measurements, controls to use and observe, machine settings, etc. GS-6: Determine correct blood specimen for tests ordered; adhere to quality control procedures to validate accuracy of tests and analyses; operate equipment, instruments, and other devices to perform qualitative and quantitative analysis of substances. You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Education There are no education requirements.
