Indian Health Service Health Technician (Optometry) in Rosebud, South Dakota
Summary This position is located at the Rosebud Service Unit in Rosebud, SD. The position involves a variety of receptionist, clerical, and technician duties designed to increase the overall efficiency of the optometry clinic. Responsibilities Prepares instruments, materials and equipment prior to beginning of clinic. Interviews patients, health records, history, and other appropriate findings Conducts optometric testing i.e., visual acuity color perception, heterophorias, depth perception, gross visual field testing, objective refraction, keratometry and introcular pressure to assist the Optometrist. Coordinates appointment system e.g., makes appointments, compiling appointment system data. Types material assigned by supervisor such as letters, memorandum and forms. Qualifications To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. Individual Occupational Requirements Specialized Experience: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. In addition to the Individual Occupational Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: GS-06: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 grade level. GS-07: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-6 grade level and/or one (1) full year of graduate education directly related to the work of the position. Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Applicants who have the 1 year of appropriate specialized experience, as indicated in the table, are not required by this standard to have general experience, education above the high school level, or any additional specialized experience to meet the minimum qualification requirements. Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Examples of Specialized Experience: GS-6: Work in a medical office performing patient histories, preliminary tests such as vital signs or visual acuities, assisting provider in delivering medical treatments and entering information into an Electronic Medical Record. A familiarity with basic ocular anatomy and experience independently providing patient education on ocular conditions and treatment and transcribing eyeglass prescriptions using standard optical notation. GS-7: Recognize and properly use a specialized retinal camera, equipment and materials associated to diagnostic and treatment procedures. Apply anatomy and its relationship to examinations/tests performed for specialty programs. Use computerized equipment to gather and enter a variety of data. Recognize adverse conditions of a patient during exam. Communicate with patients and provide information. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
