Actalent CLIA Technician, Microbiology in Rockville, Maryland

Job Title: CLIA Technician, MicrobiologyJob Description

We are seeking a CLIA Technician specialized in Microbiology to join our team. This is a full-time position with a work schedule of Saturday and Sunday, plus three other days during the week. The role involves performing clinical laboratory testing accurately and timely to ensure quality patient services and compliance with good laboratory practices and applicable regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Follow all laboratory procedures and policies.

  • Process specimens, perform test procedures, and generate reports.

  • Maintain records and logs.

  • Perform clinical microbiology techniques, including understanding growth characteristics and optimal conditions for bacteria and fungal organisms found in clinical samples such as urine, blood, and wound samples.

  • Separate bacteria from samples containing more than one organism.

  • Conduct Antibiotic Susceptibility Testing (AST) techniques, including MIC and disc diffusion.

  • Maintain anaerobic growth environments.

  • Work with aseptic techniques.

  • Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance and consult with supervisors or the Director for corrective actions.

  • Identify when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications and consult with supervisors or the Director for corrective actions.

  • Perform and document all corrective actions as assigned.

  • Ensure reports are generated only when the system is functioning properly.

  • Perform equipment maintenance procedures as assigned.

  • Assist in quality control/improvement activities.

  • Assist in the training and orientation of other testing personnel.

  • Effectively communicate with other team members.

Essential Skills

  • Proficiency in CLIA and clinical microbiology testing.

  • Knowledge of microbiology, bacteria, and fungal organisms.

  • Experience with Antibiotic Susceptibility Testing (AST) techniques, MIC, and disc diffusion.

  • Ability to maintain anaerobic growth environments.

  • Strong aseptic technique skills.

  • Effective communication skills.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Biology, Biochemistry, or Microbiology.

  • 2-5 years of relevant experience in a similar role.

  • Completion and documentation of all mandatory trainings, including annual safety training.

  • Participation in continuing education activities such as in-service training, training by technical representatives, reading relevant articles, and training outside the laboratory.

Work Environment

The work environment is a CLIA testing lab. This is a research and development (R&D) position, with most days spent in the lab performing experiments. Data from experiments will be shared and discussed with supervisors to design new experiments. Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $33.00 - $36.00/hr.
