(ENTRY LEVEL)
The Mechanical Design Engineers (MDE) job is to design pressure vessels to the standards of the ASME Boiler and\ Pressure Vessel Code. The MDE is responsible for ensuring the safety of all pressure vessel components. S/he incorporates customer specifications, quote materials, and the ASME code into the design of pressure vessels. The culmination of the design process results in accurate fabrication drawings, which are released to the shop floor.
\ Duties and Responsibilities:\ 1. Review Quote Packages-The MDE identifies quoted materials, pressure vessel dimensions, and customerspecifications; all of which are used to design the pressure vessel.\ 2. Design-The MDE uses Codewares COMPRESS ASME Pressure Vessel Design software, as well as traditional engineering practices to verify and improve (when applicable) upon quoted pressure vessel designs. The MDE collaborates with the project manager, QC manager, production manager, and engineering manager to designpressure vessels that will satisfy the customers needs, and lend itself to ease of fabrication and assembly.
3. 3-D Modeling-The MDE models pressure vessels in 3-D using Solidworks. 3-D modeling allows the MDE to validate the\ practicality of the design and check for any previously unforeseen problems (interferences, dimensional issues, etc.)\ with the design.
4. 2-D Fabrication Drawings-The MDE drafts 2-D fabrication drawings using AutoCAD. 2-D fabrication drawings incorporate all of the information necessary for the pressure vessel to be fabricated. These fabrication drawings must be in accordance with the ASME code, the customers requirements, and quoted materials.
5. Drawing Revisions-Frequently the customer requires changes to the first proposal of the design. The MDE is responsible for adjusting any calculations, models, or 2-D drawings to include the desired design change.
6. Release Valid Drawings-Once the customer approves drawings for fabrication, it is the MDEs responsibility to release\ the current valid drawings. It is important for the MDE to ensure the engineering manager, QC manager, production supervisor, and the shop floor all receive a copy of the latest drawing revisions.
7. As Built Drawings-The MDE creates as built drawings for completed pressure vessels. As built drawings consist of the\ fabrication drawings marked with material alpha codes and a weld map. The MDE gives as built drawing to the QC\ manager for his/her document package.
