The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.

Responsibilities:

Under general direction and with considerable latitude for exercise of independent judgment, provides direct research and research training support at the professional level by directing and executing small, complex research projects or major aspects of larger research projects; and provides extensive guidance to and/or directly supervises technicians, laboratory aides, graduate students, undergraduate students, postdoctoral appointees and professional staff. The purpose of this description is for Doctoral level research and its use will be strictly regulated by review and approval of the Dean┐s office to meet academic and research needs of the school and faculty.

Responsibilities

POSITION SUMMARY:

This Staff Scientist position will undertake project development and management at the senior professional level by assuming responsibility for complex research projects that constitute major aspects of several larger research projects. This position will work independently in the James P. Wilmot Cancer Institute in Dr. Laura Calvi's Laboratory. Dr. Calvi's lab is focused on understanding the role of the bone marrow microenvironment in regulation of normal and malignant stem cells, including the study of skeletal aging, radiation injury, myeloid neoplasms and preleukemic lesions such clonal hematopoiesis and myelodysplastic syndromes.

This Staff Scientist position will undertake project development and management at the senior professional level by assuming responsibility for complex research projects that constitute major aspects of several larger research projects and assist with regulatory compliance for all aspects of the laboratory. This position will work independently; supervise junior laboratory technicians, undergraduate students, pre-doctoral students, post-doctoral and medical fellows who join the research laboratory.

SUPERVISION:

This individual reports directly to the principal investigator, Dr. Laura Calvi. This position requires independent judgment in experimental planning and design as well as to the ability to troubleshoot and modify experimental methods accordingly. Furthermore, it will be necessary to accurately interpret results and analyze data to ensure the progression of research projects.

TYPICAL ASSIGNMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

In addition to project development and management, this position requires oversight of the laboratory, mouse colony organization, and active collaborations. The position will require extensive experience in molecular and cell biology, organizational independence, an ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of students, post-docs, and supervising the techniques of research technicians using a range of experimental systems and techniques.

This individual will be involved in several core research projects within the scope of the lab outlined above, including oversight and training of students, fellows and post-docs participating in the projects. This position will require an ability to support all of these projects in multiple capacities. Additionally the position will require the intellectual development and management of a primary research project that will in all its aspects, be directly organized, controlled, and executed by the staff scientist. As such, independence, a strong work ethic and focus on details will be critical. This requires a capacity to design, organize, and analyze experimental data that will serve as an invaluable tool in the publication of papers in scientific journals and future funding opportunities. This individual will remain abreast of current literature in this field and to take the initiative in preparing data for publication in peer-reviewed journals and in presenting this data at major conferences. The staff scientist will also take initiative in obtaining extramural peer-reviewed funding for their work where possible. A high level of competence in independent decision making and interpersonal skills will be critical to success in the role.

TYPICAL ASSIGNMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Laboratory Oversight/Management: (20%)

Collaborate with Dr. Calvi to review on a weekly basis the progress of all projects in the Calvi laboratory Collaborate with Dr. Calvi to oversee laboratory budget for supplies, service, vivarium costs.

Collaborate with Dr. Calvi and other members of the Calvi team lab to update and maintain all state and Institutional regulatory compliance with University Committee on Animal Resource (UCAR), Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) and International Biosafety Committee (IBC).

Advance and carry on collaboration with other researchers at outside institutions. The ability to maintain relationships with trainees, other research personnel and collaborators inside and outside the University is essential to the productivity and efficiency of the laboratory.

Project Management/Scientific Techniques: (30%)

Maintain standard of rigor and reproducibility for the lab including standardization of data analyses from multiple University core facilities and other departments including Pathology, Flow Cytometry Core, Light microscopy core, Mass Spectrometry Resource Lab, Functional Genomics Core, and Mouse Genome Editing Resource.

Maintain oversight of all cell culture procedures, retro- and lenti-viral production/infection procedures and primary human sample processing and storage.

Maintain standard procedures for and assist as needed in the performance of all mouse experiments including drug administration, sample procurement, irradiation, and transplantation related to the needs of the Calvi lab. Collaborate with the Calvi lab colony manager to ensure optimization of colony size, and breeding schemes.

Research literature to design and develop methods and resolution of technical problems in the evaluation of the appropriateness of techniques used in experimental protocols.

Bench-top: (50%)

Independently design, perform, troubleshoot and interpret data emerging from experiments in molecular/cancer biology including flow cytometry analysis and cell sorting, in vitro and in vivo assays including co-culture experiments, methylcellulose, non-methylcellulose based colony assays, murine transplantation studies, metabolomics studies, immunohistochemistry, RNAseq, single-cell approaches.

Animal experiments including transplantation, in vivo drug treatment, irradiation. Xenografting neoplasms and normal hematopoietic cells into immune deficient mice, drug treatment, tumor growth monitoring and tumor harvesting post sacrifice.

Independently design, perform, troubleshoot and interpret data emerging from experiments on the role of cancer stem cells and their interaction with the bone marrow microenvironment in myeloid neoplasms.

REQUIREMENTS:

Ph.D. or M.D. degree with major course work in the field, and a minimum of 2-5 years of relevant postdoctoral training. The lab prefers hands on experience in cell biology, murine modeling of hematopoiesis and/or myeloid neoplasms, flow cytometry, DNA/RNA isolation, molecular cloning, retro- and lenti-viral production, qRT-PCR, immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry, processing of primary human peripheral blood and bone marrow samples, and colony management. Mouse handling is required. Candidate must have excellent command of oral and written English language and work in a collaborative work environment. Required computer skills include MS Word, Excel, Photoshop, and statistical software. Occasional weekend hours may be necessary.
