Senior Student Financial Services Counselor

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide excellent services to students, parents, the RIT community and others with regard to a wide range of student financial services matters.

  • Provide students, families and RIT departments with timely and accurate information regarding student tuition, room, board, fees and payments including financial aid and third party credits.

  • Perform detailed work in the following areas: third party billing, collections, student account services, accounts receivable, cashier functions, and Federal Perkins Loan Program.

  • Perform outreach to students and parents to resolve student account balances that may total over $25,000 per semester. Recommend solutions for payment plans. Exercise professional judgment in resolving past due balances.

  • Demonstrate a strong working knowledge of applicable university policies and federal and state regulations related to all financial aid programs including, but not limited to, Federal Title IV Programs, NYS TAP, State VR programs, university funded financial aid, alternative loan programs, College savings and Prepayment Programs and other available financing options and payment plans.

  • Maintain a thorough working knowledge of all functionality of the PeopleSoft Campus Solutions system and all other related student administrative systems, providing efficient, accurate processing of all student account adjustments, third party billings and deferment programs.

  • Assist in testing new functionality for PeopleSoft, interfaces with internal departments and external agencies.

  • Maintain a thorough understanding of federal loan programs in order to act as a resource and advise students in repayment and consolidation. Ensure that families and students understand the consequences of defaulting, and the impact on future credit. Actively pursue alternatives to minimize or eliminate defaulting on repayments.

  • Answer incoming calls, process transactions and counsel walk up customers.

  • Perform other tasks and special projects as requested by management.

  • Participate in a minimum of 40 hours of training/professional development annually (or a pro rata amount based on standard working hours). Training must be applicable to the employee’s role current within the Controller’s Division with the intent of enhancing overall knowledge as well as the specific skills, whether functional or technical, required to perform successfully in the position

Required Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

  • Associate's in Business Administration, Accounting preferred OR an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

  • Knowledge of Oracle financial applications, People Soft Campus Solutions or another enterprise system, web browsers and proficiency with MS Office

  • An understanding of accounting principles, math skills and the ability to analyze financial data to make informed decisions

Skills:

  • Must possess exceptional written and oral communication skills; strong customer service orientation; as well as a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others. Must work independently with minimal supervision and exercise professional judgment in carrying out all assigned responsibilities.

  • Must be able to build and maintain key relationships with a wide-range of academic and/or other student-service departments to proactively identify and collaborate to resolve academic or financial issues.

Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge of FERPA and other applicable information privacy regulations preferred.
