University of Rochester Research Technician II in Rochester, New York

Position Summary :

The Center for Vaccine Biology and Immunology is seeking a Research Technician II to perform laboratory assignments involving some complexity and variety, planning and conducting parts of diverse projects in the Rochester Human Immunology Center core laboratory. The research includes developing and standardizing innovative immunology techniques for multichromatic flow cytometry (30+-color). The Research Technician II will working under general supervision and exercising appropriate technical judgment, apply these immunological techniques to human clinical trial evaluations crossing multiple disciplines such as autoimmunity, oncology, neurology, infectious diseases, and vaccines. The Research Technician II will work with the Director, performing experiments involving some complexity and variety in cellular immunology relevant to T, and B cell activation, differentiation, and memory and DC and NK cell analysis. Primary responsibilities include assay development, quality control of critical reagents for method standardization, performing experiments on clinical study/trial specimens and laboratory maintenance. The Research Technician II will keep accurate scientific records, notebooks, and perform routine data analysis. The Research Technician II will be responsible for day-to-day management of the laboratory, including ordering supplies, clinical specimen management, evaluation and acquisition of new equipment/reagents, and equipment maintenance (including common equipment within the Center). The Research Technician II will primarily perform projects using flow cytometry with general guidance from the director, and analyze and present data for discussion at lab meetings.

Responsibilities:

  • In accordance with broadly-outlined objectives, requirements and approaches, plans and conducts experiments using techniques of cellular immunology including spectral flow cytometry. Apply these techniques to interdisciplinary clinical study/trial evaluations.

  • With latitude for modifying methods and techniques, records, computes and analyzes data; prepares technical data for presentations, publications and preliminary data for grant submissions. Presents research results and assists in writing papers for publication. Keeps abreast of trends in field of interest by studying current research literature, abstracting scientific articles of value in the prosecution of research problems and by attending meetings, institutes and seminars.

  • Analyze experimental data using routine methods; analyze flow cytometry data using Flowjo and other proprietary software. Assesses the importance of findings in relation to the general research program.

  • Responsible for processing and storage of clinical study specimens including whole blood, plasma and serum.

  • Maintain quality control tracking of methods, instruments and reagent performance; perform QC testing and maintenance of computerized inventory and databases;

  • Will follow and help develop standard operating procedures. Maintain detailed scientific notebooks and records including clinical specimen management records.

  • Organize of the laboratory: order supplies, research new equipment/reagents, keeps financial records of laboratory expenses, organize and participate in routine lab maintenance. Maintains contact with outside research laboratories vendors and technical representatives concerning assigned area of research. Coordinates service support: repair of equipment, requisitioning of supplies and research materials. May recommend expenditures for laboratory equipment and construction and authorize expenditures for expendable supplies.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • Bachelors degree preferred.

  • 1 years of relevant experience required;

  • or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills required.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including written communication required.

  • Ability to work both independently and within a team required.

  • Knowledge of OSHA safety requirements and scientific methods required.

  • Experience with flow cytometry and lab instrumentation preferred.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $19.96 - $27.94 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
