Salary Range or Pay Grade
$58,656-$63,000
Description
The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Rochester invites applications for an Experimental Postdoctoral Associate position in the field of high-energy density plasmas. This exciting role focuses on studying plasma turbulence in laboratory astrophysics, with a strong emphasis on plasma jets. The position is expected to start in June 2025 and is initially for 1 year with the possibility of extending for another 1 year subject to satisfactory performance.
Position Overview
As a postdoctoral associate, you will engage in cutting-edge research on plasma turbulence using laboratory-based astrophysical experiments. Your primary responsibilities will include:
• Experimental Research: Conduct experiments using our state-of-the-art pulsed- power driver, HADES, to investigate plasma turbulence and plasma jets.
• Data Analysis: Analyze experimental data collected from Thomson scattering, interferometry, and high-speed cameras. Apply advanced diagnostic tools to measure plasma turbulence directly.
• Mentoring: Mentor graduate students, providing guidance and support in their research endeavors.
• Outreach and DEI Efforts: Actively participate in outreach programs for local high schools and contribute to the Department’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.
Benefits
The University of Rochester offers a dynamic and collaborative research environment with access to advanced facilities and resources. The Department of Physics and Astronomy works in close collaboration with the Laboratory for Laser Energetics, providing unique opportunities for interdisciplinary research in high-energy density physics.
Postdoctoral Associates are eligible to participate in medical, dental, and vision plans. This position provides an excellent opportunity to contribute to pioneering research in plasma physics and gain valuable experience in mentoring and outreach.
Qualifications
• A Ph.D. in Physics or a related field with a focus on plasma physics, high-energy density physics, or laboratory astrophysics.
• Demonstrated experience in experimental plasma research, including the use of diagnostic tools and techniques such as Thomson scattering and interferometry.
• Proven ability to analyze complex data sets and work with high-speed imaging systems.
• Strong interpersonal skills with experience in mentoring or teaching.
• Commitment to outreach and DEI efforts.
