University of Rochester Library Associate IV, RBSCP in Rochester, New York

GENERAL PURPOSE:

The River Campus Libraries (RCL) Department of Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation seeks a dynamic, stacks management-focused Special Collections Associate. Reporting to the RBSCP Assistant Director for Collections, the Special Collections Associate will be part of an engaged team and will provide leadership in stacks management for rare and unique materials. The successful candidate will have the authority to work independently and will have a high degree of accountability. They will be responsible for shelf-reading projects, location management both onsite and at our offsite storage facility, managing archival supplies, using ArchivesSpace to manage records, assisting in shelving materials requiring special handling, assistance with the NYS Preservation Grant, and assisting in rare book and archival housing projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Stacks Management: Collection

  • Execute plans for rehousing and shifting materials.

  • Manage archival collections in ArchivesSpace.

Stack Management: Storage

  • In consultation with RBSCP Assistant Director for Collections and department staff, manage collection storage needs for collections.

  • Think holistically about the department’s spaces and offer suggestions for more efficient use of the collection space.

Conservation and Preservation

  • Identify conservation issues in collections and manage them as appropriate in collaboration with processing archivists.

  • Coordinate, order, and manage archival supplies for collections.

  • Assist with coordinating the annual NYS Preservation Grant.

Supervise student assistants

  • Hire, train, and supervise student assistants who will assist with stacks management tasks including shelving, shelf reading, collection movement, data entry, and rehousing of collections.

Professional development

  • Participate in and contribute toward RCL and University committees, meetings, and events.

  • Attends classes and workshops in their areas of responsibility to build skills and knowledge.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate’s degree required.

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited program preferred.

  • 3 years related work experience required, or an equivalent combination of work and experience required.

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion required

  • Understanding of the nature and value of archival and rare book materials required.

  • Previous employment or internship in a Special Collections library preferred.

  • Experience using ArchivesSpace preferred.

  • Must be able to lift 40lbs required.

  • Must be able to drive to multiple locations required.

  • Knowledge of best practices in managing rare books, archival collections, and special collections preferred.

  • Ability to design spaces from a diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessible perspective preferred.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $20.92 - $29.29 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
