The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.

Responsibilities:

Regularly provides routine technical support for research activities and/or laboratory support. Applies full range of experience and previous job knowledge; frequently adapts procedures, techniques, tools, materials, and/or equipment to meet specialized needs. Assists with the design of new experiments, multimedia sampling, maintenance, operation and calibration of scientific monitoring equipment for research projects. Responsible for general data collection and assisting with analysis, recruiting participants, and may support and assist other technicians.Schedule 8:30AM-5:00PM Responsibilities General Purpose (See percentages below) Responsible for carrying out computer analyses of development of myelin pathways related to cortical and basal ganglia circuits. This requires performance of multiple techniques including scanning microscope slides, adjusting images, and analyzing data using complex software programs. Other tasks may include some laboratory skills such as, preparing microscope slides, and mounting tissue sections onto slides. Good knowledge of basic computer programing related to biological analyses are required. Willingness to work with animal tissue and the ability to work in a laboratory team environment with a diverse group of personnel is essential. Typical Assignments and Responsibilities (See percentages below) In accordance with broadly outlined objectives, requirements and approaches, plans and conducts technical procedures, non-routine and complex in nature. With latitude for modifying methods and techniques, records, computers, and analyzes data, prepares reports, presents data at laboratory meetings, and makes recommendations. Has working knowledge of computers, scientific software, MATLAB and/or Python, Photoshop, etc. ESSENTIAL TASKS Specific Responsibilities: 20% Divide the frontal cortex for each subject into cortical areas. Each cortical region is divided into subareas based on cortical atlas divisions. Draws sample strips from each cortical area. 20% Perform analysis using a combination of software programs to determine the myelin optical density. Each image is converted to grey scale. Each cortical strip is divided into deep and superficial cortical layers. Using NIH ImageJ optical density is taken for deep and superficial cortical layers for each strip. 20% Run statistical analysis to compare the development of cortical myelin. Analyze the myelin development across ages, across cortical areas and layers. Present findings to PI and/or in laboratory meetings. 15% Prepare sections for analyses. Work in an independent manner with minimal supervision. Select, clean and prepare slides for scanning. Scan slides and convert each image into a separate a JPEG 2000 file. Upload large JPEG 2000 files into the cloud server. 10% Align myelin-stained slides with NeuN-stained tiffs files. Using adjacent sections, with different histological stains, tiff images are aligned based on anatomical landmarks with photoshop. 10% General database maintenance. Provide support and technical assistance on experimental problems that may arise during the course of the experiments. Order supplies related to computer analysis. Maintain functionality of lab databases, including injection sites, and references. Perform literature searches, assist with grant and manuscript preparation, and make scientific contributions to research projects. Other miscellaneous laboratory-related duties assigned as required for research projects. 5 % Convert JPEG 2000 files to tiffs. Using Irfan View. Non-Essential Tasks: Not applicable Position Requirements - Associate's degree in appropriate discipline plus 2-3 years specialized experience in related field; B.A. or B.S. degree in Biology, Neuroscience, computer science, Bio-medical engineering; or equivalent combination of education and experience. - Strong computer skills, including experience with scientific software, Photoshop, MatLab, Python, NIH ImageJ, etc. - Ability to work in a lab team environment with a diverse group of personnel is essential. - Must be able to work with minimal supervision once trained and to listen to, convey, and exchange information with other laboratory personnel. - Strong attention to detail; ability to perform experiments with precision. - Ability to perform mathematical calculations. - The ability to communicate effectively, including written communication; follow instructions, and record information accurately. - Must have excellent interpersonal skills and strong attention to detail. - Ability to work in an independent manner, maintain a safe environment, and exchange information and interact regularly with other laboratory personnel. - The position may entail prolonged periods of standing or sitting. - License/Certification Required institutional certification for laboratory personnel (e.g., laboratory safety training, vivarium, etc.) CONTACTS: Weekly interactions with Principal Investigator and daily interactions with Research Assistant Professor Supervisor, as well as other administrative and laboratory staff.
