University of Rochester Laboratory Technician III (S) in Rochester, New York
Responsibilities
Position Description:
The individual will be part of a research team working to understand the role of viruses in Alzheimer disease using cutting edge technologies. Duties will include laboratory work related to molecular and cellular biology in the fields of stem cell biology and neurological disease, with a focus on Alzheimer’s. The individual will perform a variety of moderately complex, non-routine, laboratory assignments. Position requires excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. College level training in cellular and/or molecular biology are desirable. Initially, this individual will perform assignments working with regular supervision from the Project Director or the designee. Over time, this individual will develop independence in planning and performing experiments. – This position is uniquely suited as a launching point for research (PhD) or medicine (MD), and enables entry into a future career in regenerative medicine (both academia and industry).
Procedures performed and equipment used:
Stem cell culture procedures and genetic manipulation of cells (including CRISPR, retro- and lentiviral techniques). RNA isolation and RT-QPCR, protein isolation, gel electrophoresis, image capture and analysis (CX5), immunofluorescent analyses.
Responsibilities:
Performs routine cell culture preparations of human and rodent neural tissue, human embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells.
Plans and performs a variety of non-routine , moderately-complex cellular and molecular experiments and analyses investigating human disease biology including but not limited to: analysis of cell division and survival, gene expression analysis, genetic modification of cells using transient transfection and lentiviral vectors, drug screening and in vitro modeling of neural cell functions.
Maintains detailed lab journal. Records and calculates results. Presents data in prescribed formats.
Extracting from data, requiring some theoretical insight and interpretation, literature searches and existing resources to come up with reasoning to interpret experimental observations or problems that may be encountered. Uses theoretical knowledge to trouble shoot experiments and equipment malfunctions. Independence in problem solving is highly encouraged.
Performs general laboratory duties such as preparing reagents and re-stocking supplies and maintenance of cryopreservation systems. Helps to ensure laboratory compliance for biosafety, EHS and fire inspections. Other job duties and tasks as assigned.
Provides assistance and training for incoming students.
Participates in lab and research meetings.

Qualifications:
Associates degree in appropriate discipline plus 2-3 years specialized experience in related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience required

Highly motivated, ability to multitask, good organizational abilities, and ability to work well as part of a team. Preferred experience in the field of molecular and cell biology, including sterile technique and tissue culture methodologies. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including written communication. Bachelors’ degree in appropriate discipline and previous independent research experience. - Preferred

Pay Range
Pay Range: $19.96 - $27.94 Hourly
The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
