About our team:

We are currently hiring an Energy Storage Design Engineer, within the Toyota Material Handling Energy Solutions organization. Join our Rochester-based engineering team to identify, develop, and deploy leading-edge energy storage technologies for various material handling vehicle platforms that enable best in class Total Cost of Ownership for our customers in productivity, energy efficiency, and sustainability.

About the position:

We are looking for an Energy Storage Mechanical Engineer to join our team in Rochester, New York. The Energy Storage Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the mechanical/thermal design, development, validation and execution of Lithium-Ion Battery Pack and Fuel Cells energy storage system architecture(s) and related components. This role is responsible for defining, designing, and documenting overall mechanical and thermal management architecture, systems and components, and overseeing procurement and validation of those components and systems. The individual in this role will work closely with our systems engineering team, styling team, production engineering manufacturing teams, key suppliers, and the validation/testing teams. A strong aptitude for electromechanical components and systems will be highly beneficial in this role. In this role you will:

  • Develop detailed product requirements based on regulations, customer and system requirements, and internal requirements.
  • Develops mechanical systems and components to package, structurally support, thermally manage, and electrically connect a variety of types of Li-Ion battery cells or modules.
  • Lead design strategy to maximize potential for design/component reuse, DFM, DFA, and serviceability.
  • Specify components (materials, structures, fuses, housings, heating/cooling etc.) and ensure products meet internal and customer requirements.
  • Be responsible for development and approval of component and assembly drawing package, tolerance analysis, and use of best-practices for drawing standards and GD&T.
  • Act as a liaison between System Engineering and battery vendors/suppliers, translating the system requirements to technical and vice-versa.
  • Support cross functional engineering teams on battery management system design, electric system design, development.
  • Author lab test plans, conduct testing, analyze, and interpret results as needed.
  • Develops DFMEAs.
  • Evaluate supplier information, specifications, and validation data to ensure the selection of the proper suppliers.
  • Be key contributor in the evaluation of prospective suppliers and assist Supplier Quality Engineering in Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP).
  • Develop mechanical system DVP&Rs for integration into or support of overall system DVP&Rs.
  • Support all prototype system builds ensuring parts are on time.
  • Troubleshoot any issues with battery systems.
  • Expand professional and technical knowledge by attending educational seminars and conferences, reviewing professional publications, and establishing personal networks.
  • Contribute to team growth by completing projects in a timely manner.
  • Travel10%.

About you:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Systems Engineering.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in automotive or similar product design and development primarily developing electro-mechanical products or systems.
  • Effective communicator, capable of concisely presenting highly technical test data to internal and external customers, as well as effectively communicating with suppliers.
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to thrive in an unstructured environment; think outside of the box innovating new ideas and solutions using analytical and experimental methods.
  • Demonstrated experience launching new designs into high volume production.
  • Demonstrated experience writing Engineering Specifications and Statements of Work for supplier management.
  • Familiar with common industry standards including UL.
  • Familiar with new product design and validation System V model.
  • Strong technical aptitude, analytical problem-solving, time management, and organizational skills. 8D/5 phase, RedX Shainin, Six Sigma, etc.
  • Strategic, creative, positive attitude, team-oriented, self-motivated, and critical thinker.
  • Ability to constructively interface with all levels of the organization.
  • Superior attention to detail and standards of quality.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities

It would be great if you had:

  • Strong aptitude for electromechanical components and systems.
  • Design and development experience with high voltage lithium-ion battery module and pack systems.
  • Experience using and interpreting thermal/structural/fluid flow CAE tools.
  • Familiarity with product safety standards such as UL, EN, IEC, ANSI.

About the total compensation package:

Salary - $149,500 - $205,300 per year. Compensation depends on the selected candidate’s education and experience.

Relocation – This position may qualify for relocation.
