The Energy Solutions (ESS) business unit is a “startup within an established, global company” at the Rochester Toyota Material Handling North America Energy Solutions Development Center, leading technical aspects of an emerging business with the support of an established world known company and brand. Join our growing engineering team to identify, develop, and deploy leading-edge energy storage technologies for various material handling vehicle platforms that enable best in class Total Cost of Ownership for our customers in productivity, energy efficiency, and sustainability.

About the position:

We’re looking for a Functional Safety Engineer to lead Functional Safety Design and Analysis activities for battery and fuel cell systems. In this role, you will:

  • Lead development of safety concepts and safety requirements.
  • Primary owner of Functional Safety documentation, including safety plans, FMEDA (Failure Modes, Effects, and Diagnostic Analysis), FTA (Fault Tree Analysis), and DFMEA (Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis).
  • Lead compliance activities for relevant functional safety standards such as ISO 26262, IEC 61508, and others pertinent to electrical and electronic systems.
  • Lead System Integration strategy by collaborating with cross-functional teams including design, hardware, software, and testing to integrate safety requirements into product designs.
  • Develop and execute Verification and Validation test plans to verify and validate safety-related functions and requirements.
  • Provide guidance and training to team members on functional safety principles and best practices.
  • Diagnose and resolve electrical system issues, implementing effective solutions to improve system reliability and efficiency.

About you:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace, Computer, Software or Systems Engineering.
  • 10+ years of experience with strong functional and product knowledge in the areas of electronic systems, electrical safety, and attention to details.
  • 5+ years of experience in functional safety engineering, preferably in automotive or industrial sector.
  • In-depth knowledge of functional safety standards (ISO 26262, IEC 61508).
  • Experience in application and\or testing of products to UL583, UL2271, and UL2580 standards.
  • Excellent organization, coordination, and planning abilities.
  • Superior interpersonal, communications and listening skills.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to present technical material to a technically diverse audience.

It would be great if you had:

  • Master’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace, Computer, Software or Systems Engineering.
  • Functional Safety Certification.
  • Experience with battery management systems and fuel cell technologies.

About the total compensation package:

Salary - $149,500 - $205,300 per year. Compensation depends on the selected candidate’s education and experience.

Relocation – This position may qualify for relocation.
