GENERAL PURPOSE:

Under the general direction of the Program Director, completes a 12 month on-the-job dental assistant training program. The program will consist of classroom learning, observation and hands-on clinical training in the EIOH department of General Dentistry.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Hands-on Training: Learn and perform chair side assistance to dentists and other providers, how to maintain a sterile environment and aseptic technique, and how to utilize "four-handed" techniques; retracts the patient;s cheek or tongue, operates oral vacuum evacuating equipment and applies water and air to the field of operation.

2. Anticipate day-to-day needs in the clinical environment, including armamentarium, nitrogen tank, and other specific equipment, material and supply needs for patient and provider to ensure smooth operations and patient safety. Review patient record to consider and prepare for the complexity of each visit and/or procedure and the time frame required so that the patient schedule may be maintained or modified as needed.

3. Set-up/use specialized equipment for documentation of vital signs including pulse oximetry during nitrous oxide or IV sedation cases. Clean and maintain equipment.

4. Learn and adopt necessary skills to take intra-oral, extra-oral, and panorex radiographs. Anticipate diagnostic needs. Develop and mount radiographs.

5. Notify of patient arrival and escort patients through the clinic. Provide special assistance for non-ambulatory patients. Follow standard clinical safety protocol for Patient Identification Verification.

6. Learn and adopt necessary skills to perform instrument sterilization.

7. Enter patient data into the electronic medical record. Review discharge instructions with patient as prepared by provider.

8. Learn and adopt necessary skills to perform basic dental laboratory procedures such as pouring models for dentures, partials, and crown models, making bite guards or setting up fluoride trays for preventive therapy.

Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

High School diploma or equivalent GED required. Strong interpersonal skills; ability to communicate and interact well with patients, providers and staff preferred. Valid work permit required.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $ 15.45 - $ 20.09 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
