Job Responsibilities:

Responsible for the development and management of the Destler/Johnson Rochester City Scholars

  • Research and develop new support mechanisms for the Destler/Johnson Rochester City Scholars Program.

  • Assist in executing the MCAS portion of the DDI Summer Experience that comprises all Destler/Johnson Rochester City Scholars.

  • Assist in the development of structured academic support programs during the academic year.

  • Identify and manage advising coaches for the Destler/Johnson Rochester City Scholars.

  • Serve as one of the advising coaches for the Destler/Johnson Rochester City Scholars and monitoring academic progress.

  • Outreach and meet regularly with students to discuss needs, monitor academic progress, and assist with the resolution of academic and personal challenges.

  • Track the success of Destler/Johnson Rochester City Scholars and generate quarterly reports focused on implementing retention initiatives as well as eliminating achievement gaps

  • Maintain partnership with admissions and financial aid to ensure accuracy of information and quality of service to the Destler/Johnson Rochester City Scholars.

  • Collaborate with Financial Aid to provide ample comprehensive financial aid literacy education for all RCS students.

  • Develop strategic plan for retention and graduation of Destler/Johnson Rochester City Scholars.

  • Find opportunities for Destler/Johnson Rochester City Scholars to be involved in Rochester.

  • Create and execute a cohesive Career and Co-Op partnership to foster the matriculation of RCS students to and through graduation into vibrant careers.

  • Plan and execute structured education of graduate school opportunities for RCS students to ensure all students know their options for academic success beyond RIT.

  • Create and develop an RCS peer-top peer mentorship initiative connecting the top upper-class students with first-year students to increase the persistence and success of students.

Manage and maintain relationship with the Greater Rochester community and the Rochester City School District.

  • Schedule and maintain high school visits to Rochester School district and corresponding charter schools.

  • Make referrals to appropriate campus and community partners.

  • Maintain working relationships with strategic partners within the city schools.

  • Work on building relationships with Rochester support organizations (Hillside, Teen Empowerment, Ibero, etc...)

  • Work with 1+3 Monroe Community College Transfer Connect students once accepted to RIT.

Maintain and manage strategic partners for maintaining and growing the program

  • Responsible for assisting Admissions and the Division of Diversity & Inclusion Marketing/Public Relations team with recruitment and outreach efforts for the Destler/Johnson Rochester City Scholars Program and Charter Schools.

  • Responsible for assisting the Division of University Advancement in their efforts to fundraise and steward donors to the program.

  • Refer and advocate Destler/Johnson Rochester City Scholars to appropriate RIT and Rochester resources.

  • Maintain contact with Destler/Johnson Rochester City Scholars alumni.

  • Develop ways volunteers and individuals can work with and help Destler/Johnson Rochester City Scholars.

Supervision and leadership for the Assistant Director for Rochester City Scholars

  • Directly responsible for staff hiring, training, supervision, and performance evaluations.

  • Identifies and provides opportunities for leadership and skill development of direct reports.

Provide professional-level assistance and back-up support for the Director of MCAS (as needed and determined by the Director)

  • Assist in managing the Center in the absence of the Director

Maintain a student caseload as determined by the Director of MCAS.

Perform other related duties as assigned or requested by supervisor.

Required Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

  • Master’s degree in multicultural education, higher education administration, intercultural communication, student affairs administration or related field plus, 3-5 years’ experience working in a diverse community and/or environment.

  • Experienced communicator with proven ability to converse and interact with a wide variety of stakeholders effectively.

  • Experience in designing and conducting academic, multicultural, or leadership development programs.

  • Prior work experience working with AALANA, first generation, low-income, and underrepresented students in a higher education setting preferred.

Skills:

  • Proven ability to work across organizational boundaries as an effective member of a team, and a demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with a wide range of campus and community constituencies.

  • Strong interpersonal, written and oral communication, organizational, and project management skills

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively and efficiently perform duties and responsibilities with attention to detail and support for organizational policies, as well as the ability to anticipate demands/pressures of assignments and adjust accordingly

  • Demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of college students

Job Summary:

The Associate Director for MCAS: Rochester City Scholars is directly responsible for the overall daily functions of the Multicultural Center involving:

  • Responsibility for the development and management of the Destler/Johnson Rochester City Scholars (RCS) Program

  • Maintain relationships with key constituents and partners for RCS

  • Assist in executing the MCAS portion of the DDI Summer Experience.

  • Maintain relationships with the Greater Rochester community, Rochester City School District, corresponding Charter Schools, along with Urban Suburban Programs.

  • Supervises the Assistant Director for Rochester City Scholars

  • Serves as the back-up for the Director of MCAS

This position is supervised by the Director of the Center and is essential to the mission of the Multicultural Center and its goal of building community, trust, and academic success of RIT’s under-represented student populations.
