Responsibilities

The Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minnesota) T32 training program in cardiovascular sciences has been continually funded since 1985. It has been providing research training in experimental techniques while fostering critical thinking in cutting edge areas of cardiovascular disease pathogenesis and therapy. For this opportunity, the goal is to equip trainees interested in cardiovascular surgical research with the skills to become future academic leaders. The trainee will work towards building inter-disciplinary and multi-institutional partnerships during their research time at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota.

The objective is to increase the pool of cardiac surgeons possessing a strong foundation of knowledge and critical scientific skills that will position them well to reach key academic career milestones and secure NIH grant funding (e.g. K08, K23, R01, R03) as independent investigators. The training period is for 2 years with an opportunity to extend for pursuing PhD training through the Mayo Clinic Graduate School.

T32 trainees will benefit from a strong and well-developed research ecosystem at Mayo Clinic Rochester Campus. Mayo Clinic has a large cardiac surgical practice with world leaders in their respective fields to mentor individuals on various aspects of cardiovascular surgical sciences and techniques. Research in the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery (Mayo Clinic, Rochester) receives funding from multiple external grants including the NIH (R01), American Heart Association, industry partners, Professional Society Foundations and clinical trials. Examples of areas of surgical research include:

  1. Cardiac organ preservation biology

  2. Clinical research in heart failure

  3. Development of novel and innovative surgical techniques in cardiac surgery

  4. Biology and surgical outcomes in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

  5. Health services research in heart failure

  6. Surgical outcomes and trials research in congenital heart disease (e.g. Ebstein’s Anomaly), robotic cardiac surgery, transcatheter therapies, pericardial disease, treatment of atrial fibrillation, and other adult cardiac surgical conditions.

Qualifications

Must have a Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a field deemed relevant by the program.

The T32 funding mechanism only applies to candidates who are United States citizens, permanent residents and non-citizen nationals.
