We seek applications for an Assistant Professor position atThe University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’sin the School of Earth, Environmental and Marine Sciences beginning in the 2025-2026 academic year.

The School of Earth, Environmental and Marine Sciences ( SEEMS ) at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley ( UTRGV ) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor level to be part of a growing Ocean and Coastal Sciences research program and to contribute to the Marine Biology B.S. and Coastal, Ocean, and Earth Sciences M.S. degree programs. We are seeking candidates with teaching and research focus in one of three areas: (1) ocean productivity (plankton ecology, HABs, wind-tidal flats, seagrasses, coastal marshes, blue carbon,); or (2) fish ecology/ fisheries; or (3) marine ecosystems services valuation who will complement and expand our existing research areas. We are especially interested in candidates that can make use of the abundant, under-studied natural laboratories of the region like the Laguna Madre and are interested in interdisciplinary collaborations within the School.

The School of Earth, Environmental, and Marine Sciences ( SEEMS ) consists of a diverse faculty with a wide range of expertise in the Earth, environmental, and marine sciences. All degree programs directly engage students in the discovery process and take full advantage of the unique and exciting human-natural systems of the Lower Rio Grande Valley at the intersection of tropical climatic divides and South Texas’ coastal, estuarine, and marine ecosystems.

Part of UTRGV’s expansion is the new ocean and coastal sciences research facility in Port Isabel, Texas, adjacent to South Padre Island ( SPI ), a popular tourist beach destination. The facilities at Port Isabel expand on the existing Coastal Studies Lab and public aquarium on SPI , an interdisciplinary coastal field station with active research, education and outreach programs. SEEMS has a fleet of inshore and offshore vessels and scientific diving program.

Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate must possess an earned terminal degree (Ph.D.) in a marine discipline or related field represented in SEEMS . The successful candidate will have demonstrated abilities in teaching and research.

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas ( TRS ), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect

the Optional Retirement Program ( ORP ) instead of TRS , subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
