We seek applicants who are dedicated to servingThe University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’sstudent body as anAssistant Professor of Practicein the Department of Teaching and Learningbeginning in the 2025-2026 academic year. This Assistant Professor in Practice will teach primarily in early childhood through 6th grade (EC6) undergraduate programs.

About the College of Education and P-16 Integration

TheCollege of Education and P-16 Integrationoffers teacher preparation at the undergraduate level and, master’s programs in Counseling, School Psychology, Special Education, Educational Technology, Educational Leadership, Early Childhood, Reading and Literacy, Bilingual Education, Curriculum and Instruction, and Teacher Leadership. Two Ed.D.s are also offered in educational leadership and curriculum and instruction with several specialization areas. The College of Education and P-16 Integration is fully accredited by the Texas Education Agency ( TEA ), by the Counsel for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs ( CACREP ), and by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation ( CAEP ).

Department Background

The Department of Teaching and Learning, in collaboration with other departments, is a key producer of teachers, bilingual educators, and special educators in the Rio Grande Valley, Texas, the Southwest, and beyond. We support a full range of EC6 programs including undergraduate programs leading to teacher certification in Bilingual Education, English as a Second Language, and Special Education, and we also teach the curriculum core of UTRGV’s EC3 program. We also host eight graduate programs and certificates including an Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction. Assistant professors of practice are full-time instructors in the department of teaching and learning with significant field supervision responsibilities. The primary responsibilities of this professor of practice is in EC6 humanities methods teaching.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction, including curriculum studies, early childhood education, or bilingual education, or other closely related fields

  • Valid Texas teaching certification

  • Minimum of 5 years of teaching experience at the K-12 level

  • Evidence of effective teaching at the post-secondary level

  • Experience supervising field experiences or student teachers

  • Demonstrated experience with educational technology integration

  • Knowledge of current trends and research in education

  • Record of successful collaboration with K-12 schools, districts, and post secondary faculty, and staff

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications

Background and experience in curriculum and instruction and specific background Social Studies teaching.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate (Ed.D. or Ph.D.) in Curriculum & Instruction with a concentration in Social Studies, Bilingual Education, early childhood education or closely related field by start date

  • Experience in curriculum planning and leadership

  • Experience teaching core courses to pre-service teachers

  • Knowledge of CAEP accreditation standards and processes

  • Experience with program development, curriculum development, and assessment

  • Experience in grant writing or securing external funding

  • Experience with teacher professional development

  • Record of presentations at national/international conferences

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas ( TRS ), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program ( ORP ) instead of TRS , subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
