The Director, Medical Publications (Med Pubs) Team Lead is accountable for co-developing the strategy and ensuring the execution of Therapeutic Area (TA) aligned Scientific Communications and Medical Publications activities that support Boehringer Ingelheim and Clinical Development and Medical Affairs (CDMA) strategic objectives, specific therapeutic and asset goals, and elevates customer experience. This role is responsible for driving innovation, ensuring alignment, and maintaining operational and executional excellence around Med Pubs. This individual is accountable for advancing Med Pubs capabilities to meet the demands of a continuously evolving customer landscape by leading the development of the medical communications strategy across the entire disease state and product portfolio from early asset development to loss of exclusivity.

This individual will work closely with US Clinical Development and Medical Affairs (CDMA) Therapeutic Area (TA) team leads, Global Medical Affairs (GMA), and Corporate TA teams to drive the development of globally aligned scientific content for external utilization based on educational gaps and customer needs. The position holder will collaborate with all relevant HP functions to ensure timely Med Pubs support of any medical or commercial customer facing initiatives.

Duties & Responsibilities

Strategic Focus:

  • Engages with key local and global Human Pharma (HP) stakeholders to ensure the alignment of publications content strategy with both customer needs and HP Medicine priorities.

  • Accountable for success of Pubs Team, orchestrating the development of TA-aligned publication resources and supporting content development efforts of HP stakeholders.

  • Anticipates and responds to an evolving external environment to support adapting Med Pubs strategies to meet current customer demands and ensure provision of world class digital and non-digital medical communication resources.

  • Oversees the development of comprehensive publication plans that are inclusive of traditional publications such as abstracts, congress presentations, manuscripts, peer-reviewed podcasts, as well as other enhanced content (e.g., infographics, videos) which support comprehension and understanding of the key data in publications.

  • Works to encourage the development of publication-related, patient focused items such as plain language summaries, potentially involving patients as authors, and works with our patient engagement leads as appropriate.

  • Drives the analysis of customer interactions with published materials and identifies actionable insights to direct HP strategy for Commercial and Medical teams utilizing an approach that assesses perceived content value and data dissemination methods to inform scientific data gaps, improve delivery of information, and deliver a superior end-to-end customer experience.

  • Demonstrates business acumen and a strong ability to align scientific communications and delivery channels with medical objectives and cross-functional strategic imperatives.

  • Initiates process improvement projects driving changes and updates to global process documents to ensure all Focus Market needs are being satisfied.

  • Critical decision maker in Med Pubs platform identification, implementation, and enhancements to drive highly efficient medical communication across all regions.

Planning & Execution:

  • Responsible for overarching coordination of departmental functions including people management, project prioritization and execution, and budget oversight.

  • Leads strategic collaboration with TA leadership to generate and evaluate insights with focus on determining customer Med Pubs needs as part of Medical Affairs Planning.

  • Oversees development and management of Med Pubs assets including, launch-related deliverables, periodic resource updates, and responses related to time-sensitive, urgent business needs.

  • Directs the teams’ utilization of TA-aligned Med Pubs budgets to execute customer-driven, HP business-aligned objectives.

  • Directs the Med Pubs team in the coordination of work with HP Services and in the oversight of agencies for publication plan management, adherence to budget, and project delivery timelines.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution required; Doctoral degree (e.g., Pharm.D., M.D., Ph.D.) preferred.

  • Ten-plus (10+) years professional experience in pharmaceutical, biotech, agency and/or academic fields that directly relate to Med Pubs as defined by medical publications expertise.

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience leading and developing people / teams with proven examples of talent development.

  • Leadership skills with strong Medical / business acumen and US healthcare / pharma knowledge.

  • Experience working in highly matrixed, cross-functional teams (locally & globally); demonstrated ability to help set vision, direction and upskill others.

  • Possess understanding of the clinical development process, medical affairs functions, product commercialization, and pharmaceutical regulations and regulatory requirements.

  • International experience preferred, but knowledge and experience with US Med Pubs practice is essential.

  • Demonstrated customer focus and customer satisfaction as well as demonstrated continuous improvement of processes/assets.

  • Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally at the franchise level and at all levels across the enterprise.

  • Exhibits flexibility in working collaboratively across internal and external stakeholders.

  • Advanced abilities in influence and working effectively through others.

  • Demonstrated understanding of applicable regulations, and industry standards as related to Med Pubs, promotion, and pharmaceutical company interactions with health care providers.

  • Understanding of internal and external guidelines, including those related to Med Pubs, including FDA product promotional guidance; GPP4; ICMJE; PHRMA Guidance and the OIG; Guidance for Pharmaceutical Manufacturers.

Eligibility Requirements :

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction.

  • Must be willing to take a drug test and post-offer physical (if required).

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.

Compensation Data

This position offers a base salary typically between $170,000 and $261,000.  The position may be eligible for a role specific variable or performance based bonus and or other compensation elements.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

Partnerships:

  • Collaborates with HP business partners including TAs, Health System and Payor Strategy, FBM, HEOR and Commercial to ensure successful execution of business strategy as related to Med Pubs deliverables and cross-functional initiatives.

  • Coordinates representation of Med Pubs function in both internal and external meetings to support stakeholder informational needs, strategies, and understanding of Med Pubs process.

  • Determines appropriate team participation in external professional organization activities relevant to Med Pubs (e.g., DIA, ISMPP) to enhance individual and BI reputation for Med Pubs excellence.

  • Ensures that the team manages relationships with external authors in the preparation and review of publications for assigned projects, including the management of publication steering committees.

  • Collaborates with Medicine Excellence, Scientific Affairs and CDMA Team leads regarding omnichannel, digital dissemination, and patient engagement to plan and develop content for internal and external sites for a variety of audiences.

People Leadership/Talent Development:

  • Leads a team of medical publications professionals, and coordinates relationships with Delivery Unit staff and agency partners dedicated to developing premium quality Med Pubs resources, refining processes, and content to respond to customer feedback, and supporting HP Medicine priorities.

  • Encourages professional development to enhance growth and retention of top talent driving future success of HP Medicine.

  • Supports Med Pubs team members responsible for precepting Medical Affairs post-doctoral medical fellows to ensure growth and development of first in class next generation of Medical Affairs professionals.

  • Participates in fellowship program recruitment process to attract highly capable candidates and evaluates potential program advancements.
