Job Summary and Qualifications

The Respiratory Therapist coordinates and delivers high-quality, patient-centered respiratory care in accordance with the nature and specific requirements of the department, and consistent with the scope and standards of practice for the relevant state and specialty. As a vital part of the patient care team, the Respiratory Therapist performs a variety of diagnostic tests and therapeutic procedures and monitors patients receiving invasive and noninvasive mechanical ventilation.

Administers floor and critical care therapy modalities. Performs arterial puncture and blood gas analysis and instrument QC. Responds to cardiopulmonary arrests, rapid responses, trauma activations and labor and delivery calls. Maintains and processes equipment. Provides specialized service to the department.

What you will do in this role:

  • Maintains American Heart Association, Health Care Provider BLS and ACLS certifications

  • Maintains state license requirements.

  • Maintains NBRC credentials for Registered Respiratory Therapist

  • Fulfills staff meeting, in-service, competency and on-going education requirements.

  • Ensures safe and appropriate oxygen administrations through the Oxygen Therapist Driven Protocol.

  • Performs non-invasive SpO 2 monitoring through pulse oximetry via overnight studies, exercise, continuous and spot checks.

  • Administers all therapy modalities to Adult, Neonatal and Pediatric patients per physician’s orders

  • Is responsible for the initiation, operation, monitoring and weaning of patients with mechanical ventilators, high frequency, and oscillatory ventilators.

  • Performs airway clearance therapy, including VEST

  • Performs basic operations on the Meditech system.

  • Performs regular equipment rounds.

  • Performs equipment cleaning and set up.

  • Performs arterial puncture and blood gas analysis.

  • Adheres to established blood gas quality control protocol.

  • Performs troubleshooting and maintenance of Blood Gas Machine.

  • Responds and participates in all Rapid Response situations.

  • Responds, participates in all code blue situations, and assists neonatologist/nurse team at all “high” risk deliveries.

  • Responds and participates in all trauma activations.

  • Sets up and monitors NIPPV (non-invasive positive pressure ventilation) through both Bi-Level and Volume ventilation.

  • Assists in bedside therapeutic bronchoscopies.

  • Initiates, operates and monitors Nitric Oxide therapy.

  • Initiates, operates and monitors Heliox therapy.

  • Precepts new employees or staff members entering into a new area of training.

  • Performs bedside spirometry.

  • Performs/assists in intubations as needed.

  • Performs EKG testing

  • Checks all physician orders prior to therapy and gives thorough, accurate report to oncoming shift

  • Enters all patient contacts into Meditech.

  • Participates in all areas of departmental duties, including assistance in new employee orientation and continuing education.

  • Performs regular equipment rounds.

  • Initiates and documents patient teaching including family and/or significant others. Uses appropriate Patient Education documentation modality.

What qualifications you will need:

EDUCATION :

  • Required: High School Graduate

  • Graduate of a Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) approved Registered Respiratory Therapy Program

EXPERIENCE:

  • Preferred: One year critical care experience.

  • One year neonatal/pediatric critical care experience.

  • Knowledge and experience in basic floor care, noninvasive and mechanical ventilation, blood gas analysis, pulmonary function testing, bronchoscopy, capnography and oximetry equipment.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION :

  • Required: Current Virginia Licensed Respiratory Therapist

  • Maintain NBRC credentials for Registered Respiratory Therapist

  • Current BLS

  • Current ACLS Certification

  • Current NRP, PALS Certification

  • STABLE certification (within first year)

  • Preferred: NBRC subspecialty credential Neonatal/Pediatric Specialty Exam

  • PFT or RPFT (PFT lab only)

  • Active member of the American Association for Respiratory Care
