North Wind Solutions is a Government contracting small business with operations at military and civilian installations across the United States. The company's focus is facilities operation and maintenance, waste management and radiological services, security control and force protection, and environmental services.

POSITION PURPOSE:

We are seeking a highly motivated Cyber Security Intern to join our team at the Hanford Site, a large US Federal environmental cleanup site in Richland, Washington operated by the Department of Energy. This internship provides a unique opportunity for college-level students to gain hands-on experience in security operations (SOC) and governance, risk, and compliance (GRC) within the field of cyber security. The selected candidate will work closely with experienced professionals to support and enhance the cyber security program at the Hanford Site.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in monitoring and analyzing security events and incidents within the Security Operations Center (SOC) environment.

  • Support the identification, investigation, and resolution of security alerts and anomalies.

  • Collaborate with senior team members to assess security risks and vulnerabilities across the organization's infrastructure and applications.

  • Assist in the implementation and maintenance of security tools and technologies to enhance the overall security posture.

  • Participate in security compliance assessments and audits to ensure adherence to regulatory requirements and organizational policies.

  • Contribute to the development and documentation of cyber security procedures, standards, and guidelines.

  • Assist in conducting security awareness training and outreach activities for staff members.

  • Stay updated on emerging cyber security threats, trends, and best practices through continuous learning and self-study.

  • Provide general administrative support to the cyber security team as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

  • Currently enrolled in a college program with a focus on computer science, information technology, cyber security, or a related field.

  • Basic understanding of cyber security principles, concepts, and methodologies.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

  • Commitment to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and confidentiality.

Special Requirements:

  • US citizenship or permanent residency required for eligibility to work on federal projects.

  • Must pass pre-employment background check.

  • Must pass pre-employment drug screening.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Familiarity with security technologies such as SIEM (Security Information and Event Management) systems, IDS/IPS (Intrusion Detection/Prevention Systems), firewalls, and antivirus solutions is a plus.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This position is primarily sedentary in nature. The work involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. The work may involve exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally or a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Works mainly in a typical office environment or from home. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
