Leidos Antarctic Support Contract (ASC) has an opening for a Fleet Maintenance Manager . The Fleet Maintenance Manager will oversee the daily and recurring fleet maintenance activities and priorities of a diverse fleet of vehicles and heavy construction equipment for the National Science Foundation, with locations at McMurdo Station, South Pole Station, Palmer Station, all Field areas and camps, Pt. Hueneme, CA, Christchurch, NZ and Punta Arenas, Chile.

Deployment to Antarctica will be required of this role (approximately 4-6 months per year). The candidate in the position must complete the physical and dental examinations required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica.

Due to contract requirements, US Citizenship is required.

Must obtain a Public Trust security clearance prior to start date. This process could take up to 4 months.

The anticipates salary for this role will be between $110,000 - $120,000 annually, along with a percentage increase during deployment.

About the Antarctic Support Contract:

Leidos Antarctic Support Contract (ASC) is the prime contractor to the National Science Foundation (NSF) in support of the United States Antarctic Program (USAP). Leidos supports the NSF’s Office of Polar Program’s Antarctic Infrastructure and Logistics by aligning with their Mission and Vision Statements:

  • Vision: Expanding our scientific reach in Antarctica through increased operational and logistical effectiveness.

  • Mission: To provide the operational and logistical platform necessary for the U.S. to conduct world-class science in Antarctica and maintain its active and influential presence on the continent.

Leidos ASC provides science and logistics support for approximately 150 science and technical events across three geographically remote research stations; McMurdo Station, Palmer Station, and South Pole Station and several deep field sites across Antarctica. Each station or field site supports world class research across multiple science disciplines. The planning and implementation of science support requirements in Antarctica is a critical part of our mission.

The Challenge:

  • Deploy to McMurdo Station for the Austral summer, working out of the Vehicle Maintenance Facility offices, with trips, as needed, to South Pole, Palmer Station and Field locations

  • Oversee daily McMurdo fleet maintenance activities and priorities and act as a liaison between Operations Managers and the Vehicle Maintenance teams to ensure programmatic maintenance priorities are met

  • Provide additional support and guidance, as needed, for maintenance activities and equipment in the Mechanical Equipment Center (MEC) and Aerospace Ground Equipment (AGE) work centers

  • Develop and implement maintenance schedules and procedures for fleet assets

  • Act as Technical Manager for McMurdo, South Pole and Palmer Station VMF budgets and approves labor hours

  • Track and provide remote guidance and support for South Pole, Palmer Station maintenance activities and priorities

  • Conduct regular quality control inspections and audits of maintenance work to ensure compliance with standards.

  • Ensure VMF leadership implements corrective actions to address any deficiencies in maintenance practices or operations

  • Foster a culture of safety, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the maintenance teams

  • Provide on-continent support for Fleet Management and Property data gathering needs

  • Analyze telematics data to provide preventative and corrective guidance to department leadership, technicians and operators

  • Lead Health of the Fleet discussions and reporting

  • Coordinate with Fleet Management team on stakeholder engagement for recurring Fleet Planning

  • Provide on-site leadership for new asset commissioning, crane/lift inspections, project asset readiness

  • Coordinate with Facilities and other support departments, as needed, on outstanding/unresolved facility issues such as plumbing, heat, garage doors and other critical infrastructure

  • Ensure adherence to Maximo maintenance system requirements and liaison with Maximo Lead and users to enhance capability

  • Support repair campaign planning and implementation

  • Provide support for SOW development, vendor engagement/visit, parts list reviews and other project Fleet procurement activities

  • Support timely collection and reporting of auditable, internal and external customer-driven data, such as the annual Federal Automotive Statistical Tool (FAST) report.

  • Support Fleet Management in development and maintenance of near term and long-range plans for fleet maintenance, upgrades and reductions

  • Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of customer roles, requirements, constraints, priorities and timelines.

  • Provide unifying oversight of vehicle maintenance activities and methods at all three stations and three work centers.

  • Support development and quality control of all fleet data collection, reporting, visualization and analysis.

  • Forecast downrange fleet requirements or constraints.

  • Leverage emerging industry techniques, process and technology.

  • Provide efficient response to ASC (Antarctic Support Contract) and NSF National Science Foundation) customer data calls.

  • Provide a unified Fleet Maintenance presence to the USAP (United States Antarctic Program) community and the NSF client.

  • Liaise frequently with other functional and area managers to review status and priorities.

  • Support development and review Fleet standard operating procedures to ensure they are up to date with each geographical location.

  • Provide technical and administrative continuity for ASC Fleet at Antarctic stations by maintaining historical and current files and monitoring progress on a year-to-year basis.

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, standards and policies related to fleet maintenance

  • Leverage computerized maintenance management system (Maximo) to store and manage all operational data points to include maintenance, work activities, asset lifecycle management, procurement

  • Performs other duties as required.

What Sets You Apart:

  • Degree in Fleet Management, Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Technology and/or Business Administration or related area is preferred. Additional years of experience in a supervisory or management role, and/or relevant certifications considered in lieu of degree.

  • 5+ years of diversified experience in Fleet Maintenance or Fleet Management or the automotive industry (preferably in locations with multiple-brand fleets).

  • Career record must include the demonstrated ability to work with and independently manage a multiple skilled work force and strong financial background, including at least four years of supervisory and management experience.

  • Strong knowledge of maintenance best practices, tools and techniques.

  • Proven leadership and team management skills.

  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities.

  • Must be a highly motivated self-starting team player with effective written, verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Strong work ethic and willing to work cross functionally to complete assigned tasks.

  • Travel is required in this position; valid driver license is required.

  • Must be able to obtain a Public Trust clearance

You May Also Have:

  • Lean Six Sigma (LSS) Certification and Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification strongly desired.

Pay Range:

Pay Range $87,100.00 - $157,450.00
