SSSD is seeking a Systems Engineer (Level 2) to act as a Radiation Effects & Survivability Engineer that will be responsible for hardening electronic systems against Natural Space Radiation Effects and both Endo- and Exo-Atmospheric Nuclear Weapon Effects. The Radiation Effects & Survivability Engineer works in close coordination with Program Radiation Effects and/or Nuclear Hardness & Survivability (NH&S) Leads as well as electrical, mechanical, and systems engineers to analyze and test devices, designs, and systems across a variety of environments and systems including Satellites, Missiles, etc.
The Systems Engineer (Level 2) is expected to be a self-starter, have excellent communication and time management skills, and build strong mentoring relationships with Senior engineers. This role will be fully onsite in Redondo Beach, CA.
This requisition is contingent upon capturing program award(s), acquiring and maintaining associated business and/or customer funding, and obtaining and maintaining the necessary clearance(s) prior to start date.
The Systems Engineer will mitigate against effects from any of the following areas:
Natural Space Environment Threats such as:
-Space Radiation Effects, including Single Event Effects (Upset, Latchup, Burnout, Transients, Functional Interrupts, etc.) from Heavy Ions, Protons, Galactic Cosmic Rays, Solar Flares, Electron/Protons Total Dose and Displacement Damage, etc.
-Space Survivability Threats, including Micrometeoroids, Orbital Debris, Atomic Oxygen, and UV degradation.
Hostile Nuclear Weapon Threats such as:
-Transient Radiation Effects in Electronics, comprising Total Dose, Displacement Damage and Prompt Dose Upset, Latchup, Burnout, and Transient effects from X-Ray, Gamma Ray, Neutron Environments
-EMP effects from environments such as High-Altitude EMP, Source Region EMP, Dispersed EMP, System-Generated EMP, Internal EMP, etc.
-Mechanical effects such as X-Ray Thermomechanical Shock, Plated Debris, Ground Shock, Thermal blast, Overpressure, Dust & Debris, Fallout, Scintillation, etc.
Essential Functions:
-Environment Analysis such as Environment Calculation/Derivation and Modeling, Radiation Transport, etc.
-Electrical Design Analysis such as Circuit Design/Simulation, Device Evaluations, Parameter Degradation Analysis and Derating Development, Circumvention & Recovery, Photocurrent Transient Protection and Burnout Mitigations, etc.
-Mechanical Design Analysis such as Material and Coating Selections, Shielding and Shadowing Analyses, CAD review, etc.
-Cable & Harness Design Analysis such as Shield and Dielectric Material Selections, SGEMP Drive Current and Pin Threat Calculations, etc.
-Reliability Analysis such as SEE Rate Calculations, Ground Intervention Impacts, Availability Impacts, SEE Criticality Analyses, FIT Rate Contributions, etc.
-Test Support such as Test Planning, Parameter/Condition Selection, Test Circuit Development, Irradiations or tests for various effects (e.g. Total Dose, Displacement Damage, Prompt Dose Rate, Single Event Effect, Current Injection, Pulsed Power), Data Analysis and Reporting, etc.
Basic Qualifications for Level 2 Systems Engineer:
-Bachelor's degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) discipline with 2+ years of engineering experience OR
-Master's degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) discipline
-Candidate must have the ability to obtain and maintain a US Govt. DoD Secret Clearance prior to start date.
-Strong written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
-Master’s Degree or higher, preferably in Electrical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Physics, or another closely related technical discipline
-Experience with any of the following is highly preferred:
-Standards and handbooks: MIL-STD-883, MIL-STD-1766, MIL-STD-3053, MDA-STD-001, MIL-HDBK-814, MIL-HDBK-815, MIL-HDBK-816, MIL-HDBK-817, EM-1, DTRA Redbook and/or Bluebook
-Environment Prediction Tools: AE9/AP9, CREME96, SPENVIS, ORDEM, KESSLER
-Transport Tools and Codes: MCNP/Attila4MC, NOVICE, Testable Hardware Toolkit (THTk), CEPXS, PUFF-TFT, THOR, XTERRA, TRIM/SRIM, SREMPTAPS, ITS, WinGS
-Software languages and environments: Python, Fortran, Java, C++, C#, SQL, HTML, CSS, Javascript, ASP.NET, Visual Basic, LabWindows
-Experience with hardening against Hostile Radiation, EMP (with emphasis on SGEMP), and Mechanical Effects
-Experience with developing Natural Radiation & Survivability Analyses
-Knowledge of the semiconductor device physics associated with radiation effects
-Active US Govt. DoD Top Secret clearance and/or active SCI access at time of application

Salary Range: $89,400 - $134,200
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
