Meta Research Scientist Intern, Scanning Eye-Tracking Systems (PhD) in Redmond, Washington

Summary:

Meta Reality Labs (Redmond, WA) is looking for interns to help create the next generation of eye tracking for virtual and augmented reality. Our research focuses on true solutions to complex tracking problems, delivering novel technologies and algorithms fundamental to future VR and AR systems. You’ll have the unique opportunity to work with industry-leading researchers and engineers who are defining the future of AR/VR.We welcome PhD students in biomedical imaging, computer vision, machine learning, optics, robotics, electrical engineering, applied physics or similar. In particular, we are looking for candidates with experience in extracting motion from video, simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), and 3D computer vision techniques. We welcome students with a passion for working in a strongly collaborative team that spans research across algorithms, software, hardware design, and systems prototyping. Our team at Meta Reality Labs offers twelve (12) to twenty four (24) week long internships and we have various start dates throughout the year. Some projects may require a minimum of sixteen (16) consecutive weeks.

Required Skills:

Research Scientist Intern, Scanning Eye-Tracking Systems (PhD) Responsibilities:

  1. Design and implement robust algorithms for laser-scanning based eye-tracking systems

  2. Design experiments, collect data, and analyze data with and without humans-in-the-loop to de-couple and quantify eye tracking error sources

  3. Derive first-order paper studies to better understand the trade space in comparison to conventional camera-based glint/pupil tracking methods

  4. Collaborate with researchers and engineers across diverse disciplines through all stages of project development

  5. Regular communication of research agenda, progress and results

  6. Publish research results in top-tier journals and at leading international conferences

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Currently has or is in the process of obtaining a PhD in the field of Computer Science, Optics, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related STEM field

  2. 2+ years experience with computer vision, image processing, optimization, calibration, image stitching, eye tracking, retinal imaging, or related topics

  3. 2+ years experience with scientific programming languages such as MATLAB or Python

  4. Hands-on experience working with custom research-grade imaging and sensing systems

  5. Must obtain work authorization in the country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience with one or more of the following: simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), automatic montaging methods, eye tracking, retinal imaging, machine learning, sensor fusion, laser scanning systems

  2. 2+ years experience in C/C++

  3. Experience with deep learning frameworks (Pytorch, Tensorflow, etc)

  4. Demonstrated programming experience via an internship, work experience, coding competitions, or widely used contributions in open source repositories (e.g. Github)

  5. Broad, end-to-end understanding of all aspects of tracking objects in 3D space (i.e. hardware, firmware, software, algorithm, analysis, evaluation)

  6. Experience with basic optical systems, with an emphasis on the optics of the human eye

  7. Past experience with cross-group and cross-culture collaboration

  8. Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by first-authored publications in journals or at conferences, etc.

  9. Intent to return to degree-program after the completion of the internship
