To achieve this goal, we are looking for a Principal Thermal Engineer with a passion for developing robust customer-focused solutions and striving for engineering excellence in mechanical design of large complex systems. The Principal Thermal Engineer will provide technical leadership in the development and deployment of high reliability liquid cooling designs at scale.

Responsibilities

In this role, you will provide technical leadership for the design and development of complex liquid cooling solutions in the datacenter at the rack and server level. You will have responsibility and oversight for the thermal and mechanical implementation of fluid distribution systems within server racks encompassing all aspects of fluid flow and pressure management, cold plate design and reliability, pump design and reliability, material compatibility and corrosion resistance, and fluid/air volume management. You will utilize expertise in fluid systems design to deliver high performance liquid cooling with production level reliability.

As a technical leader within Azure’s Thermal Engineering team, you will contribute to the design of servers, racks, and associated datacenter building blocks. You will develop interface management for liquid systems and develop standards by which the team is able to scale our liquid cooled systems development in pace with the growth of AI. You will manage

relationships and interfaces with Microsoft’s datacenter engineering and operations teams to ensure smooth deployment of Azure systems. You will manage relationships with suppliers to ensure robust designs and predictive roadmaps of future technologies in support of Microsoft’s future product portfolio. You will also manage relationships with our ODM and SI partners to ensure proper development and implementation of our liquid cooled technologies.

You will be responsible for creating product specifications, interface control documents, and associated collateral to clearly communicate design intent and document design expectations. You will work across programs in a technical leadership role with responsibility for ensuring an integrated and robust approach to fluid systems design across our portfolio. You may also own specific programs for which you are the lead Thermal engineer developing a complete solution.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of technical engineering experience

o OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years of technical engineering experience

o OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years of technical engineering experience

o OR Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years of technical engineering experience.

  • 10+ years of industry experience related to thermal systems design and development.

  • Understanding of thermal and mechanical design principles, fluid dynamics, pumps and compressors, mechanical vibration and shock, valve and manifold design, material compatibility, manufacturing processes, and validation

  • 8 years of experience with Thermal/Fluids simulation using Ansys/Fluent/Icepak and/or Siemens/Mentor products

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in the electronics industry specifically related to high-powered liquid cooled servers

  • 2+ yrs experience with a thermal simulation tool ( e.g; Flotherm, Ansys, Icepak, etc.)

  • Experience with prototyping, thermal design and development, and high-volume manufacturing of electronic enclosures

  • Experience partnering with and overseeing ODM engineers

  • Experience in pump design, fluid loop sensors and controls, heat exchanger design

  • Familiar with CAD software tools PTC Creo, Windchill or similar software (ie Solidworks, Catia)

Hardware Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
