JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Penn State Berks seeks a Director of Athletics, to provide leadership for the College’s NCAA Division III athletics programs, club sports, campus recreation, and wellness offerings. The Director of Athletics administers the overall athletic program of Penn State Berks for approximately 200 student-athletes and 2,000 students. Penn State Berks is a member of the United East Athletic Conference and has 12 varsity sports programs. Athletics and recreation are essential components of the educational and student life experience that provide opportunities for campus and community outreach.

The Director will provide leadership, supervision, and vision for all Athletics units, including compliance, sports medicine, competition, recruitment and retention of student-athletes, and athletic facilities management. The Director will develop, analyze, and manage the budget for areas of responsibility and oversee staff and coaches including hiring, evaluation, and professional development. The Director will engage in fundraising and donor relations in partnership with campus leadership.

The successful candidate will be an energetic leader who is enthusiastic and knowledgeable about working with diverse students and communities. A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging is essential in this role, and the Director assures that departmental planning and decisions promote a full commitment to diversity and cultural competency in all aspects of athletics.

The Director reports to the Chancellor and serves as a member of the Administrative Council. This requires active participation in the overall leadership and management of the campus, partnering with the senior leaders of the other units such as Maintenance and Operations, Academic Affairs, Development and Alumni Relations, Enrollment Management, Strategic Communications, Police and Public Safety, and others on strategic planning, data-informed decision making, policy and procedure development and implementation, and new campus initiatives.

This position typically requires a Bachelor’s degree or higher and five years of experience in intercollegiate athletics, coaching, or athletics administration. CPR, First Aid, AED certifications may be required.

Additionally, the successful candidate will demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Proven track record, with increasing levels of responsibility, leading and managing athletics and coaches

  • Demonstrated cultural competency and strong commitment to student diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, supported by a track record of actions and achievements

  • Understanding of, appreciation for, and experience interpreting and implementing risk management policies and procedures, and crisis management plans

  • Excellent supervisory skills, including the ability to supervise and develop multiple individuals at varying stages of their careers

  • Excellent interpersonal and relational skills, including the ability to foster relationships across campus and with external partners to achieve mutually beneficial goals

  • Excellent strategic and integrated management and budgeting skills

  • Excellent judgment and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to advocate for Athletics while understanding and communicating overarching campus priorities and opportunities

  • Communicate clearly both verbally and in writing and demonstrate the ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds

This position requires the following clearances: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check. This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks in line with the requirements of the position.

The pay range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$58,836.00 - $123,528.00
