Radford University Tartan Transfer Advising Coordinator in Radford, Virginia

Job Summary:

The Tartan Transfer Advising Coordinator will provide multifaceted coordination between campus partners, high level administrators and counterparts at each community college partner location. The coordinator will provide significant knowledge and know how on building and maintaining a successful in-state 2+2 transfer program for students and program partners. The person in this position always acts with the most professionalism while representing Radford University and the Highlander Success Center during in person and digital interactions. The advising coordinator will work closely with the Director of Advising on the implementation of professional academic advising protocols and procedures, including data-driven decision-making and assessment of all Tartan Transfer advising practices.

The coordinator will also provide appropriate and effective academic advising to students in the Radford University Tartan Transfer partnership program and Radford exploratory students through a case management advising model. The position responsibilities include assessment and evaluation of academic abilities and goals, and advising of students regarding academic programs and changes, developing academic plans and class schedules, assisting students in major, minor, and career exploration, and presenting academic information to prospective new student groups (including both students and families). This position will be responsible for analyzing applications, completing transfer evaluations, reviewing transcripts for advising purposes, and maintaining appropriate records (including the utilization of the university’s online student engagement tools). Communicating effectively with campus partners, advisors, community college partners, and sustaining an environment of academic and professional excellence for students, faculty, and staff is a must. The coordinator supports student life, learning, and success through student advocacy, academic coaching, customer service, campus and community referrals, student and faculty engagement, and institutional outreach. The advising coordinator also collaborates regularly with the office of Admissions and Enrollment management as well as all university departments to ensure student advocacy and a sense of belonging within the university, as well as support student retention and persistence endeavors. The position reports to the Assistant Director of Academic Advising.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and equivalent experience in education, counseling, student personnel, or higher ed admissions, enrollment, or recruiting.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead change and innovation in a complex environment.

  • Experience in planning and implementing programming for new students, student and faculty engagement and persistence activities.

  • Experience in making independent judgments, analyzing, and solving problems, managing multiple tasks, working independently as a self-starter.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, customer service, and time management skills.

  • Proficient with current office software such as Microsoft Office.

  • Ability to work empathetically with people from diverse backgrounds.

  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s or advanced Degree

  • Academic advising experience in a higher education setting

  • Course transfer evaluation experience

  • Experience with the VCCS system

  • Experience with Radford University policies, procedures and departments

  • Knowledge of student recruitment and retention issues

  • Experience interpreting, applying university, state and federal policies/procedures.

  • Previous experience/knowledge working with Banner, Starfish, and similar systems.

  • Demonstrated expertise in working effectively with different constituent groups
