WM Risk - WM Operational and Product Risk - Office of the Chief Operating Officer (COO)

The Morgan Stanley Wealth Management (MSWM) Operational and Product Risk COO Team operates as a trusted partner to the Wealth Management business and control partners (Legal, Second Line Risk, Compliance, HR, Finance, Platforms, Operations) to help develop and execute on the strategic priorities of WM Risk as well as the business while ensuring ongoing operational efficiency and risk mitigation.

The COO Team is focused on further enhancing and strengthening Wealth Management’s risk management framework as well as partnering with key stakeholders to enhance the ongoing strategic design and implementation of our comprehensive operational, product, franchise and conduct risk frameworks.

Primary Responsibilities

The COO Team is looking for a candidate who is both an operator and strategic thinker to run the operations and help enhance the risk frameworks. The individual will help the team in developing and enhancing existing governance frameworks across various risk disciplines (i.e., product, ESG, conduct, franchise, operational, conflicts, etc.)

The individual will assist this team in designing an efficient, streamlined, and consistent support model and provide support to our business partners as part of the COO function.

The individual will also help build and execute on the team’s other larger strategic initiatives including designing, planning on execution as well as assisting in monthly reporting activities etc. The individual will work collaboratively across the whole team on helping develop procedural documentation, ad hoc projects and initiatives as well as performing data analysis.

  • Coordinate and assist with the end-to-end formal new product approval process to facilitate a reliably comprehensive, efficient, expeditious and well documented review of all proposals
  • Identify tactical and strategic enhancement opportunities across all areas of risk coverage, working closely with senior stakeholders, control representatives and business sponsors
  • Assist in evaluating business growth activities and initiatives and associated monitoring metrics to identify key risks and provide critical oversight
  • Help the team to design and implement strategic initiatives such as establishing an end-to-end Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) framework across the Wealth Management business
  • Perform current state assessments across various risk disciplines to identify areas of development and partner across various business areas and control partners to develop a cohesive framework
  • Assist with the creation of relevant Committee meeting minutes and related administration
  • Address regulatory and audit related administrative requests
  • Develop and coordinate reporting requirements for senior risk and business management
  • Administration and maintenance of policy and procedures.

Skills and Requirements

  • 5 years of relevant investment products, Wealth Management and / or risk management experience
  • Investment products knowledge a plus
  • Undergraduate degree or higher in Finance, Economics, or other related fields
  • Excellent management reporting skills by creating PowerPoint decks is a must
  • Understanding of investments products, markets, and risk management frameworks
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and willingness to solve open-ended problems
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, promote teamwork, and execute sound reasoning and judgment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in creating succinct and strategic presentations for management
  • Strong working knowledge of MS Office (Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)

Expected base pay rates for the role will be between $85,000 and $135,000 per year at the commencement of employment. However, base pay if hired will be determined on an individualized basis and is only part of the total compensation package, which, depending on the position, may also include commission earnings, incentive compensation, discretionary bonuses, other short and long-term incentive packages, and other Morgan Stanley sponsored benefit programs.
