Research Associate Available Title(s): 305-YN_FACULTY - Research Associate Business Title: Research Associate Employee Type: Faculty (+) (Fixed Term) Time Type: Full time Position Term: 12 Month Position Details: Summary of Duties: The successful candidate will use a variety of equipment to study the effect of postharvest systems on fruit quality in sweet cherries, apples and pears. To accomplish this, the scientist will be expected to use a variety techniques including controlled atmosphere storage, crop protectants, fruit biochemistry, fruit quality, microscopy, and non-destructive techniques such as hyperspectral imaging. Reflectance fingerprinting and data analyses using hyperspectral systems is a key feature of our research strategy. Laboratory findings can be scaled up working with our established industry connections with some of the largest apple and pear storage operations in the country. The hire will be responsible for project management, development and implementation of research plans, and reporting findings in peer reviewed publications and funding agencies. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 80% | Research and Informal instruction • Data collection, processing and analysis • Continual review of related scientific literature • Assisting faculty researchers and other collaborators, or acting independently, in planning and designing research experiments; establishing priorities and recommending schedules, time tables and costs. • Presenting project results to internal and external parties. • Developing, performing, and/or monitoring sampling, storage, and extraction procedures for plant metabolic analysis. • Operating specialized scientific equipment. • Performing statistical analyses, including selecting the appropriate analysis procedure, setting up data for analysis, judging validity and reliability of data, designing and writing programs to perform analyses, and producing written reports on the result of the analyses. • Effectively using available technology to facilitate the success of the project. • Liaison with other WSU departments and USDA-ARS units, scientific and industry collaborators, and others to ensure success of projects. • Engaging in fieldwork and writing of peer reviewed publications and reports. 15% | Service • Participate in college and university committees; evaluate research proposals and grants 5% | Other Duties as Assigned • Miscellaneous duties related to the Departmental, College and University missions; • Participation in faculty meetings. Work Conditions: • Work conditions will be split between the field and the lab. The candidate may be required to work outside in extreme heat conditions for short periods of time. Required Qualifications: • Ph.D. in Plant Sciences or related field • Demonstrated effective interpersonal, written and oral communication skills; • Demonstrated ability to interact with large groups and individuals at all work levels; • Demonstrated sensitivity to and desire to promote diversity; • Have, or be able to obtain at time of hire, valid driver's license.
