Summary of Duties:

 

This position will oversee the management of the research orchards associated with the TFREC. The Farm Manager will coordinate, train, and supervise activities of the TFREC farm crew as well as acquire and supervise temporary labor as needed to carry out necessary orchard management activities. He/she will work closely with the Center Director as part of an administrative team, to plan and execute management activities (new orchard plantings, irrigation expansion or installation, pest control, etc.) to ensure that orchards, and associated facilities, meet the needs of projects implemented on orchard lands.

 

This position will work closely and communicate regularly with research and extension faculty at the TFREC, Washington Tree Fruit Research Commission, other WSU RECs and Departments, USDA Agricultural

Research Service, and any other institution or organization working in research orchards, to establish, maintain and monitor the status of research trials. As part of the Center administrative team the successful candidate will oversee and manage budgets allocated to research orchard operations. In addition, this position will be a spokesperson for the Center's research orchard activities and interact with the tree fruit industry to ensure that the research orchards reflect industry standards.

 

Job Duties:

 

60% | Agricultural Management

 

• Coordinate of seasonal activities, management of land assigned to individual.

 

• research programs.

 

• Oversee farming operations to ensure the properties are presentable to the general public, equipment is maintained or replaced to ensure functionality, and contracting to outside parties for custom operations.

 

• Maintain close communications with the Director and faculty of WSU TFREC and appropriate administrative support personnel for assistance and coordination of duties.

 

• Coordinate timely and appropriate farm cultural practices for all field operations and successful completion of project components including securing initial and additional bids for supplemental work.

 

• Initiate purchases and confirmation to bid procedures according to WSU BPPM. Develop (with PI's) and implement pest control programs for all tree fruit plantings. Keep detailed records of all cultural practices by crop and block throughout the year.

 

20% | Personnel Management

 

• Oversee all personnel supervising specific to farming operations such as farming

 

• support, orchard support, and others to be designated.

 

• Oversee all documentation such as leave requests and time reporting.

 

• Meet regularly with employees as needed to plan, execute, and review long and short term project lists, and delegate additional duties when needed to ensure overall farm operation functionality.

 

• Evaluate performance and address concerns through appropriate corrective action and make recommendations for disciplinary action, if needed.
