Summary of Duties:

 

The incumbent is responsible for administration, management and oversight of the day to day operations of the Lind Dryland Research Station located in the Lind, WA area. Responsibilities include planning, coordinating and implementing farm management operations to support individual and collaborative research projects; maintaining and improving farm infrastructure through strategic acquisitions of equipment and improvements; operating the farms with a positive fiscal balance; supervising one or two permanent, civil service employees and various temporary hourly employees as needed; and organizing and executing field days, farm advisory committee meetings, and research planning meetings. The position requires extensive knowledge of farm management and skills in operating and maintaining specialized equipment and instrumentation required for modern farming using best practices, and in a manner consistent with maximizing the research utility of the farms. The incumbent must regularly exercise independent judgment and discretion in work that involves excellent communication and collaboration with WSU faculty members and USDA adjunct scientists from the Departments of Crop and Soil Sciences, USDA-ARS, and other departments with faculty who conduct research at Lind.

 

Farm Management | 60%

 

In consultation with research and extension faculty members, provide leadership in both annual and long-term planning of farm management practices to facilitate research. Oversee day-to-day farming operations (planting, spraying, harvesting, supervision, etc.) on the Lind Dryland Research unit, including recording information on operational activities, pesticide applications, yield, and inputs. Coordinates with research faculty and staff to provide land for research plots. May assist and advise with farming operations on research plots. Develop and implement an overall farm safety plan that includes regular training in safe operation of farm equipment. Works with the tenant farmer on our Neare land to develop the best management practices for the land.

 

Equipment & Facilities Management | 20%

 

Maintain and update farm equipment and facilities, including conventional and direct seed tillage, spraying and planting equipment, and computerized and variable-rate farming equipment and instrumentation required for the research and teaching functions of the farms and satellite projects. Screen and obtain federal surplus equipment and supplies to help meet unit needs. Supervise the Lind Utility Worker on maintenance projects. Identify larger infrastructure repairs and work with Facility Services and the Lind Program Specialist on obtaining funding and completing the projects.

 

Financial Management | 15%

 

Coordinate with the WSU Land Manager and Lind Program Specialist in production records and the sale of commodities produced on the farm.
