DEPARTMENT INFORMATION:

This position is only open to Colorado state residents.

This position is covered by the Partnership Agreement between the State of Colorado and Colorado Workers for Innovative and New Solutions (COWins).

New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.

DESCRIPTION OF JOB:

About the Unit The Heavy Equipment Mechanic III works in the Colorado Department of Transportation's (CDOT's) Region 2, Maintenance Unit. The Unit exists to maintain the Colorado Department of Transportation highway system and facilities to as near original conditions as constructed utilizing available resources, personnel, equipment and material to ensure a safe roadway for the traveling public.

About the Position This Journey level Equipment Mechanic position inspects, diagnoses, troubleshoots, modifies, and repairs light and heavy trucks and specialized snow, ice, and road repair equipment to preserve and assure the entire fleet of equipment is in safe operating condition following the rules and policies of the Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT). Diagnoses, services and repairs various systems that are found on pieces of heavy equipment such as transmissions, brake systems, electrical systems, ignition systems, fuel systems, hydraulic systems. Vehicles and equipment include, but are not limited to, 10-ton tandem snowplows, tractor-trailers, bulldozers, motor graders, paving machines, 6X6 and 4X4 trucks, Snow blowers and mower tractors with mower decks tow behind and side arm.

All tools needed will be paid for and provided to you by CDOT.

Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

Testing and Diagnostics

Visually inspect equipment for defects and/or leaking fluids. Use scan tools and diagnostic computers. Read error messages and codes and clear codes when repaired. Diagnose equipment components for defects or malfunctions, utilizing a wide range of test equipment. Diagnose and repair electronic controlled equipment components; engines, brakes, transmissions, cab components, hydraulic controls, sanders, liquid de-icing, AVL and oil distributors. Gather information from operators verbally, email, or SAP to identify specific equipment problems. This will include test driving vehicles and operation of equipment and components. Repair and Rebuild Brakes: Repairs or replaces shoes, pads, drums, hoses, calipers, cylinders, lines, chambers, control valves and linkage. Cooling: Pressure test, flush radiators, replace hoses a d thermostats, repairs or replaces radiator and water pumps, fan drives, test for DCA treatment, air intercoolers and oil coolers. Drive: Repair and replace drive shafts, differentials, axles, manual, automatic and sophisticated computer-controlled transmissions, clutches, transfer cases, power take-off systems, transmission reversers, all-wheel drive steering axles and final drives. Electrical: Trace circuits and schematics. Repair or replace fuses, batteries, lights, instruments, warning devices, controls and switches, computer controls, modules, alternators, starters, shorted or open circuits and wiring.

Hydraulic: Repairs or replaces pumps, hoses, valves, motors and cylinders. Air: Repairs or replaces compressors, air dryers, brake valves, air tanks and hoses. Steering and Suspension System, repairs or replaces tie rods, drag links,
