Description of Job
The Facilities Director is responsible for overseeing the planning, development, and maintenance of the university’s physical infrastructure. This full-time administrative professional role ensures that all facilities are safe, functional, and conducive to the academic and operational needs of the university community.
Responsibilities include strategic and technical direction of all University Facility projects and activities; budgeting and fiscal management; procurement, facility and equipment management; and supervision of facilities managers.
Primary Duties
Project Management:
Act as the delegate for the Office of State Architecture, representing the organization and ensuring alignment with OSA policies. Provide regular updates to executive leadership on OSA-related matters.
Participate in decisions related to overall planning, designing, and managing construction, capital improvement and general engineering projects.
Plan and oversee construction and renovation projects, ensuring they are completed on time and within budget.
Prepare regular reports on project timelines and budgets.
Coordinate with architects, contractors, and university stakeholders to ensure project goals are met.
Leadership and Management:
Develop and implement strategic plans, policies and procedures for facilities management and campus development.
Lead and manage the Facilities Management team, including maintenance, custodial, mechanical, structural, and grounds staff. Includes coordinating staff training, assigning and reviewing work, participating in the interview and selection process, and conducting performance evaluations.
Lead and manage negotiations with outside contractors to deliver the best and highest value to the University.
Prepare all preventative maintenance and capital construction reports for the State of Colorado in a timely manner.
Lead efforts to bring universal accountability and operational efficiencies throughout Facilities department.
Lead, manage, and act as a mentor for a diverse group of engineering professionals, technical operators, field and administrative staff.
Operations and Maintenance:
Oversee the maintenance and repair of buildings, grounds, and equipment.
Develop and manage the facilities budget, negotiate contracts and approve expenditures.
Prepare annual budget requests, and assure effective and efficient use of budget funds, personnel, materials, facilities, resources and time.
Perform cost control activities including monitoring revenues and expenditures to assure sound fiscal control.
Oversee the preparation of applications and administer federal and state grants for capital improvement programs; ensure coordination of grant program administration with financial grant administration.
Implement preventive maintenance programs to extend the life of university assets.
Sustainability:
Review and administer energy conservation efforts, renewable energy project review and implementation of green initiatives.
Promote and implement sustainable practices in facilities management.
Develop initiatives to reduce the university’s environmental footprint.
Monitor and report on sustainability metrics.
Manage and oversee energy performance contracts to improve energy efficiency and reduce costs.
Collaborate with energy service companies (ESCOs) to identify and implement energy-saving measures.
Monitor and report on the performance and savings achieved through energy performance contracts.
Safety and Compliance:
Participate in decisions related to overall planning, designing and implementing all modifications and improvements to university facilities, including all modifications as they relate to ADA compliance.
Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations related to facilities and safety.
Ensure all facilities comply with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
Develop and implement emergency response plans and procedures.
Conduct regular safety inspections and audits.
Ancillary Duties

$125,000 - $135,000
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
Minimum Qualifications
Engineering-focused Bachelor’s degree
Minimum of 7 years of experience in facilities management, with at least 5 years in a leadership role
Experience in positions or activities that required:
Strong knowledge of building systems, maintenance practices, and safety regulations
Excellent project management and organizational skills
Strong leadership and team management abilities
Effective communication and interpersonal skills
Experience with, or commitment to, working in a diverse workplace
Preferred Qualifications
Engineering-focused Master’s Degree
Certifications in Facilities Management and/or Project Management (e.g., IFMA, BOMA, PE, PMP, and CAPM)
Knowledge of sustainability practices and energy performance contracts
Experience in local or state government entity
Experience with energy performance contracts and working with energy service companies (ESCOs)
