About Medical Services- Pathology (Laboratory)
This work unit exists to maintain essential laboratory services that are available 24/7 to meet customer needs and aid in the diagnosis and continuous treatment of patients at the Colorado Mental Health Hospital in Pueblo (CMHHIP). This includes on-site comprehensive laboratory diagnostic testing in the following specialty areas: Bacteriology, Mycology, Parasitology, Virology, Syphilis Serology, General Immunology, Routine Chemistry, Urinalysis, Endocrinology, Toxicology and Hematology. This work unit provides a wide range of laboratory procedures including but not limited to: routine monitoring, medication levels, compliance testing, and STAT services. CMHHIP Laboratory is nationally accredited by The Joint Commission and maintains a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) Certificate of Accreditation (COA). The Laboratory concentrates on operational systems critical to the safety and quality of patient care through the accuracy of test results that ensure accurate patient diagnosis. Laboratory Services are provided to the Office of Civil and Forensic Mental Health (OCFMH) and Forensic Community-Based Services (FCBS).Description of Job
About the Position:
This position serves as an individual contributor and is key to proper procurement of specimen collection as a phlebotomist. The decisions regularly made are at the operational level, ensuring the integrity of the specimen is maintained throughout the collection process while utilizing universal precautions. . This position has to schedule and evaluate incoming orders from various providers and determine when to reschedule, prioritize, or follow up on orders based on the laboratory Blood Draw Schedules. This position requires a working knowledge and proficiency in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and requires knowledge in medical/laboratory terminology. This position exhibits professional and technical knowledge and skills in Administrative duties. Completes required documentation for PMPI and workload activities. Conveys a positive and professional image of the Laboratory to others. Answers telephone and/or in-person requests for information promptly and courteously.This position is many times the front line of communication for the laboratory. Interpersonal skills, integrity and etiquette are essential to the position.
This position will perform waived testing. Knowledge and skill of Laboratory tests,principles, and theory are required. This position also exists to provide administrative assistance to Laboratory Technologists by ensuring response to calls and questions, as well as, other administrative duties.
Clinical Activities:
This position is responsible for various specimen collections on patients and staff. These include, but not limited to (venipunctures, urine specimens collections, and Chain of Custody hair collections). Ensures identifying the best method for retrieving blood samples and other specimens, preparing specimens for laboratory testing, and performing screening procedures.Verifies patient identification and explains sampling procedures to patients, as well as, labels all specimens properly. Tracks collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting times of collections performed. Responds to emergency (STAT) specimen procurement requests as well as any in or outpatient routine request for laboratory testing. Follows and adheres to all procedures and processes for proper laboratory specimen collection.
This position performs reference testing, sending specimens to outsourced locations for processing and testing. This position verifies specimen integrity and requirements prior to dispatch, prepares specimens for reference laboratory dispatch and testing and packages and stores specimens according to specimen requirements.
Personnel required to perform waived testing in regards to the following tests, but not limited to: Rapid Streptococcus (Group A), Occult Blood, Whole Blood Rapid HIV, Urine Pregnancy, and POCT Glucometer Testing. Personnel will participate in assigned Competency Assessments to maintain competency and meet regulatory requirements.
Aids laboratory staff in culture set up within the Microbiology Department.
Information Management:
This position is required to utilize computer-based programs to monitor, schedule, and collect laboratory orders. These systems include, but are not limited to: Behavioral Health Record (BEHR), compliance monitoring sites, glucometer licensing systems, and reference laboratory testing LIS Systems.
This position uses the BEHR system to review laboratory test orders and schedules to determine appropriate scheduling that aligns with the unit specific draw days, schedule and access specimens. Data entry for specimen collection and specimen location tracking. Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the provider, referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification, and notifying supervisor of unresolved orders.Troubleshoots computer and system problems and ensures that workspace is clean and neat.
Monitor Sentry System for upcoming compliance and oversee the urine drug screen collection process in the front of the laboratory. Coordinate with patients on dates and times to collect specimens. Monitors glucometer licensing system for connectivity and acceptability. Utilizes reference testing LIS system to monitor, track, and dispatch specimens for testing at outside locations.
Customer Service, Inventory, and Safety
Position performs various administrative assistant duties for the Department of Pathology. This position will answer multiple phone lines, route calls to appropriate areas, check for department specific mail, and greet customers/clients; acknowledge the reason they are present in the department.
Monitor and maintain supply inventory in the drawing area, stock rooms, and reference testing supplies. Stock all supplies for daily draws within the laboratory and specimens sent out for reference testing. Inform supervisor of needed and outdated supplies in a timely manner to avoid a shortage crisis.
Clean and maintain laboratory glassware and pipets. Monitor glassware inventory. Operate and maintain a water purification system. Discards all obsolete or broken glassware. Check and document on eyewash stations in the laboratory to ensure working properly. Operate and maintain a water purification system. Discards all obsolete or broken glassware. Monitor and change sharps containers when full in accordance with safety and infection control precautions. Monitor and transport HIPAA container(s) to the designated area for disposal according to Hospital Policy.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
Minimum Qualifications:
Experience Only:
Three (3) years of relevant experience in phlebotomy.
Preferred Qualifications
Two years recent (within the past five years) working in a professional clinical laboratory as a Phlebotomist with experience in specimen collection and CLIA waived testing
Exceptional phlebotomy skills including experience with a “difficult stick” patient population
Demonstrated commitment to laboratory, phlebotomy, safety, and infection control practices
Experience working with psychiatric/behavioral health population
Solution-focused and collaborative spirit
Exceptional interpersonal and customer service skills
Knowledge of spreadsheet, database and word processing applications
Strong organizational skills
Strong attention to detail and accuracy
Experience with electronic health record and laboratory information systems
Handles multiple priorities effectively
Completion of a Certified Phlebotomy program preferred
