Brown University Instrument/Machine Shop Manager in Providence, Rhode Island
Job Description:
The School of Engineering at Brown University has a new and exciting opportunity to hire a Joint Engineering and Physics Instrument Shop Manager.
The Joint Engineering and Physics Instrument Shop (JEPIS) fabricates high precision components in support of the research and teaching activities of the engineering and physics departments. Determine, evaluate and implement both short‐term and long‐term requirements for JEPIS. Manage the daily operations of JEPIS including the supervision of current Instrument Makers/Machinists. Responsible for maintaining the creative and efficient work environment, ordering and maintaining stock, keeping shop floor organized, clean and safe. Also responsible for maintaining a safe student shop where students are taught basic machining skills. This position requires a self-motivated individual who enjoys solving challenging machining problems while effectively administering shop operations. Good communication skills are required to interact with a broad cross‐section of the university community, including students. Must be able to assist individuals with limited technical expertise at turning an idea and a drawing into a working part. Hands‐on experience with CNC machining is required and should spend 50% of time machining. Some of these duties may be delegated to an assistant or lead person.

The successful candidate, as a minimum, should have the following background:
A minimum of ten years’ experience as a machinist or equivalent training
A class A toolmaker
Experience in assigning and following jobs to other machinists
Experience in the use of CNC equipment and use of software required for such instruments
Job Competencies
Self‐motivated individual who enjoys solving challenging machining problems while efficiently
administering shop operations.
Supervisory experience, operating an efficient, organized and safe work environment. Must have
experience estimating time required to do a job and quote prices as to what a job will cost.
A Class A toolmaker and machinist with hands‐on experience with CNC machining is required. Extensive
training in soldering, welding, benchwork, blueprint reading, and CAD drawing and design is
essential. Require full knowledge of machining procedures and proper safe set‐ups. Should possess
personnel skills to supervise and train other machinists and students.
Good communication and interpersonal skills
Some experience as a shop administrator is highly desirable
Possess a willingness and ability to support and promote a diverse and inclusive campus community.
Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.
