Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory Qualified Neutral Beam Cryogenics Operator, Mechanical Technician in Princeton, New Jersey

Overview

A Qualified NB Cryogenics Operator is able to operate and maintain the Neutral Beam 1070 Watt Helium Refrigerator and additionally operate, inspect, repair, troubleshoot and maintain associated Neutral Beam mechanical systems and equipment. Provide coverage for 24/7 operation including required overtime, night shift, weekend and holiday coverage as needed.

Under general supervision, performs a number of more complex and diversified technical tasks utilizing expertise and knowledge they have acquired. May perform some non-routine tasks requiring independent judgment typically involved with setting up of test apparatus, operation of equipment, and evaluation of the performance and reliability of systems and subcomponents. Follows various Laboratory procedures and applies PPPL prescribed standard technical practicesand principles.

Responsibilities

Core Duties

  • 45% Operate Neutral Beam switchboard and computer control consoles controlling the 1070 watt helium refrigerator. The operator shall be responsible for maintaining the system within standard operating parameters with appropriate supervision. The operator shall initiate alarm response procedures if operating parameters fall outside normal ranges or if alarms sound. The operator shall have proficient mechanical skills to properly maintain all mechanical systems.

  • 35% Basic maintenance and repair of Neutral Beam Mechanical systems. This work involves radiological activated and contaminated equipment and legacy parts. Perform basic mechanical tasks with close supervision and oversight for daily tasks or, as part of a crew for larger activities including hoisting and rigging, working with vacuum and water systems, basic tooling, maintenance and troubleshooting of Neutral Beam subsystems.

  • 15% Contribute to the review, revision and maintenance of technical procedures and operations documentation including service manuals.

  • 5% General housekeeping, logistics, and industrial construction activities. Maintenance of organization and cleanliness of work areas.

    Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Candidates must have Mechanical Technology or AA degree with 3 to 5 experience; or no degree and 5+ years of general mechanical experience with automotive, industrial or facility mechanical and electromechanical systems operation and maintenance.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proficient use of computer software for data logging and word processing. Effective and clear communication skills. Adequate hearing and speaking for good communications, alarm annunciation, announcements, operations, troubleshooting, telephonic and electronic notification and situational awareness in a construction or industrial environment.

  • Ability to read and interpret schematics and mechanical drawings.

  • Basic computer skills including experience with word processing, spreadsheets and email applications.

  • Required to work rotating shifts, including overtime, weekends and holidays as required per project run schedule. Operation of the local control center and other controls may be for extended or irregular periods of time. Full mental concentration is required for entire duration of the operator’s shift.

Physical Requirements

  • Full or fully corrected vision, correct depth and color perception, occasional close work, work in low light conditions.

  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

  • Continuous walking, standing or sitting.

Working Conditions

Potentially hazardous conditions may be encountered during activities that must be completed safely. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Repetitive motion activities, work in very awkward positions, confined space and RWP areas.

  • Bending, twisting, climbing, ladders, elevated work using harness, stairs, lifts.

  • Work on cryogenics, high voltage or radiation contaminated equipment.

  • Exposure to dust, temperature excursions, humidity, monitored low level radiation, noise, household and industrial chemicals, solvents and some fumes.

  • Working with/near/on hand tools, powered hand tools, machine shop tools and rotating equipment.

  • Working with or near moving vehicles, equipment, cranes, hoists, tractor, lifts and forklifts.

  • Routine requirements to wear protective clothing for arc flash protection, mechanical grease and oil protection, radioactive contamination.
