This Project Coordinator positions are for two recent graduate with a Master of Architecture (professional or post-professional) for the duration of twelve months, to begin October 2024. These Post-Master Project Coordinators are to lead research, analysis and design for a project entitled From Agriculture to Architecture: Straw Building Material. The project is funded by the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment and High Meadows Environmental Institute Innovation Fund for the Sustainability of our Planet. The positions are to work part-time in collaboration with Princeton Co-Principal Investigators Guy Nordenson and Paul Lewis (SoA). The work will develop research, material fabrication and design studies that explore straw as a basis for architectural construction and design. Applicants should have strong making skills as well as visual and communication skills, adapt at Rhino3D and GIS. Knowledge of bio and geo-based building materials is strongly recommended.

Responsibilities
  • * Develop research about straw as a building material, understanding what is known about the material, as well as understanding emerging knowledge about binders, particularly bio and geo-based binders. Research past and current tectonic systems that use straw and thatch as a building material, with a particular emphasis on how these might use material streams in the US South.
  • * Develop a series of materials tests with straw and a range of binders, skins, and frames. These tectonic assemblies will them be tested for their structural and insulative capacities.
  • * Develop prototypical wall sections and architectural designs using straw, and translate all of the graphic material into a visibly coherent and compelling document.
Qualifications

Essential Qualifications:

  • * Master's Degree in Architecture (professional or post-professional)
  • * 1+ years work experience
  • * Software: Rhino3D, Adobe Suite, CAD, GIS
  • * Communication: Skill at team coordination
  • * Fabrication: Familiarity with shop tools and machines

Preferred Qualifications:

  • * Knowledge of bio and geo-based materials is highly recommended.
