The Operations Technician will work with the Shop Supervisor and Lead, and will be responsible for the installation, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of laboratory utility systems. These systems include steam, potable water, process water, and sanitary piping. Site wide pumps to include hot/chilled water distribution, wastewater, and process. The technician will also be responsible for the maintenance service and repair of all sitewide air compressors as well as responsible for plumbing repair and service. The technician will coordinate with other groups within the Department and throughout the Laboratory to ensure long-term, safe and efficient operation of utility systems.

Responsibilities

Core Duties

  • * 25%: Install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair a wide variety of pneumatic systems to include: compressors, controls, air driers, and associated equipment.
  • * 25%: Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair a wide variety of centrifugal pumps (HW/CW, DI, Waste) including replacing seals, bearings, alignment, and wiring.
  • * 20%: Install pipe and fixtures, such as sinks, toilets, water fountains and lab wide process piping. Perform and document backflow preventer tests repair as needed. Assemble pipe sections, tubing and fittings, using couplings, clamps, screws, bolts, cement, plastic solvent, threading, soldering, brazing and welding equipment.
  • * 20%: Install, maintain and troubleshoot lab wide electromechanical systems to include: Overhead doors, hoists, cranes, and associated equipment.
  • * 5%: Maintains proper paperwork of work orders completed in computerized maintenance management system. Follows all PPPL procedures and policies.
  • * 5%: Perform Other Duties as assigned by Supervisor.
Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • * High School Education or equivalent and formal post High School vocational education. Completion of a Journeyman level training program in plumbing/pipefitting, HVAC, industrial maintenance, pneumatics, or related trade.
  • * 5 plus years experience in industrial maintenance or field service environments.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • * Experience with the troubleshooting, service, and repair of centrifugal pumping systems.
  • * Experience with pneumatic control installation, troubleshooting and repair.
  • * Experience with rebuilding, service, troubleshooting, and maintenance of commercial air compressors.
  • * Ability to independently service and maintain piping systems.
  • * Ability to be on-call, and work overtime, off-shifts, weekends, and holidays.
  • * Maintain good communication between departments and other shop personnel. Maintain good customer service relationships.
  • * Reads and understands blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams and layouts.
  • * Brazing, soldering, and industry standard pipe joining techniques.
  • * Hoist/Crane/Elevator operation and service experience is a plus.
  • * General knowledge of the National Electric Code, National Plumbing Code, Life Safety Code, OSHA and standard industry practices. Conform to industry standards concerning safety, lock-out/tag-out, inspections, and operations when dealing with electrical systems. Maintain a high consciousness of safety for all personnel and areas involved.

Physical Requirements

  • * Ability to lift 50 pounds. Work in confined spaces, at heights, and exposure to plant hazards (steam/electrical/mechanical/radiological).
