Position Summary
The Assessment Specialist IV leads the planning, developing, and evaluation of items, tests, and related products that are closely aligned to relevant subject-area standards and student-learning objectives. This role applies strong content knowledge and expertise in assessment and psychometric principles to the end-to-end processes for all phases of test development, including item writing, review, and evaluation, test assembly, and scoring, and leads discussions with clients and other stakeholders about the design and development of assessments and about general assessment topics more broadly. The Assessment Specialist IV is a corporate and/or division expert in testing, specifically in the development of assessment instruments, practical measurement, and test design. The Assessment Specialist IV plays a lead external role, representing ETS to the public on issues related to test design and development. Additionally, the role regularly provides guidance and training to less experienced assessment specialists.
Basic functions and responsibilities
Serve as a subject-matter expert in [TBD]
Provide thought leadership in the design and development of assessments
Write and review items, gather and resolve feedback from multiple sources on items and evaluate item acceptability after testing
Provide leadership in the design of AI-generated assessment and learning content in collaboration with AI engineers and developers
Oversee constructed-response scoring activities, including work with faculty consultants or other external subject-matter experts
Manage and monitor external content contributors in the development of test materials; devise strategies for improving external contributors’ results
Lead content development activities in areas outside of core expertise
Provide leadership in the design and development of new assessments and innovative products and services; develop new blueprints and item types, working with project team and client
Approve responses to customer inquiries, ensuring accuracy and appropriateness
Serve as a point of contact for committees and other external stakeholder groups; plan and facilitate meetings, train committee members, advise on measurement issues, and respond to client feedback to develop content that meets specific client expectations
Plan, manage, and direct test development activities as a team lead
Work on special development projects as appropriate
Adhere to ethical standards and comply with the laws and regulations applicable to your job function

EDUCATION
Master’s Degree in field of specialty or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.
GENERAL EXPERIENCE
This position requires a minimum of 9 years of increasingly responsible professional experience (including teaching, writing, editing, applied statistics, and/or developing assessments), at least 7 of which must be in educational measurement.
This position requires both mastery of field of specialty and extensive knowledge of testing and measurement.
Classroom experience and familiarity with current subject-area standards are desirable.
This position requires strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to apply rules of grammar, etc., to the development of materials in content area.
This position requires well-developed organizational skills, strong technical skills, and a willingness/adeptness with regards to learning new technology.
