University of Maine System TRIO College Access Talent Search Advisor in Presque Isle, Maine

The University of Maine at Presque Isle is seeking to hire a TRIO College Access Talent Search Advisor. This is a home-based, full time (40 hours per week), 11 month position, grant funded position. The goal of TRIO College Access Programs are to assist students who are income-eligible and/or would be first-generation college students, to succeed at each level of school from grades 6-12 and to become college students. This position provides direct service and support to students through academic advising, career and college planning, organization and study skills, financial literacy and other instruction while monitoring student progress at each grade level toward graduation from college. Partner schools locations are/ but not limited to Houlton/ Hodgdon, Southern Aroostook and Katahdin areas.

Most business days (Monday-Friday) are spent in the partner schools following a mutually agreed upon schedule. Morning, evening, weekend and holiday hours may required in this position.

The annual salary for this position is $43,888.00. Duties include (not limited to):

  • Recruit, select and enroll Talent Search students as defined by federal regulations and program policies.

  • Use appropriate diagnostic tools to conduct needs assessment for each eligible student; design an individual plan of support, and provide ongoing monitoring.

  • Visit assigned target schools monthly to provide academic support and program services to participating students.

  • Coordinate academic enhancement activities including career exploration, high school curriculum planning, study skills, test-taking strategies, college visits, and other pre-college preparation and planning.

  • Develop and conduct presentations and workshops for ongoing curriculum.

  • Engage in collaborative efforts to ensure comprehensive support and education opportunities for students, seeking internal and external resources to augment program services as appropriate.

  • Document student progress as it relates to the needs assessment and learning plan.

  • Plan and organize local college visits.

  • Plan and execute strategies to increase parental involvement in students college –going planning, including developing a database of contact information (quarterly newsletter, social media, workshops).

  • Maintain contact with recent high school graduates to ensure smooth transition into college (Summer Melt Program).

  • Compile ETS data to inform parents/school personnel annually.

  • Maintain student hard files and electronic database to include all necessary documentation in compliance with federal requirements.

  • Monitor and analyze trends and developments relevant to problems and needs of students/program participants.

  • Develop and maintain effective, ongoing working relationships with administrators, guidance professionals, teachers, students and parents/guardians at assigned partner schools.

  • Arrange for tutoring and/or other academic support for Talent Search students across the subjects as needed and appropriate. Assist with locating and hiring appropriate tutors.

  • Counsel, advise and assist with applications and financial aid for college, including registering for standardized exams, writing letters of recommendation, assisting with assembly and submission of applications to colleges, and advising students on and completing FAFSA, CSS PROFILE, and applications for scholarships.

  • Participate in regular staff meetings and professional development opportunities as agreed upon with supervisor.

  • Assist with the “plan to inform” in the communities/schools being served: community meetings, presentations to faculty, assisting with marketing materials or news articles as needed.

  • Counsel and support Talent Search alumni as appropriate to support the achievement of Talent Search grant goals.

  • Perform other reasonably related duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Baccalaureate degree in educational counseling, education, psychology, social work, or other appropriate and related field.

  • Two or more years of demonstrated, employed experience working with low-income and educationally disadvantaged youth and/or adults in an educational environment.

  • Demonstrated respect for adolescents.

  • Demonstrated sensitivity and experience working with individuals from diverse social, economic, ethnic, academic and cultural backgrounds.

  • Must have ability to travel to assigned schools, including a valid driver’s license and ownership of a reliable, fully-insured vehicle, and a clean driving record to drive University vehicles.

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree strongly preferred in above degree fields, or individuals who are currently pursuing master’s degrees and have the required experience in direct service.

  • Three or more years of related work experience is preferred.

  • Preference is also given to individuals who have succeeded in overcoming the disadvantages of circumstances like those of the population the project serves.

  • Experience with and demonstrated understanding of college admissions and financial aid processes for low-income students.

  • Experience working in programs with objectives similar to TRIO.

  • Knowledge of respective target schools preferred.

This position also requires a working knowledge of career and academic assessment; understanding of high school and higher education; understanding of adolescent development and learning; an understanding of human diversity; effective oral and written communication skills; strong organizational skills; basic computer and technology skills; experience recruiting persons from diverse and multicultural or disadvantaged populations; knowledge of aptitude/vocational testing tools; skill in group dynamics and facilitation; the ability to work independently of direct supervision.
