We have an exciting opportunity in San Diego, CA (Poway, CA) for a Tools and Support Engineering Supervisor. As a Tools and Support, Engineering Supervisor you will play a pivotal role in supervising the development of engineering tools and processes for our world class, production Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV) programs.

This aerospace engineering supervisor will be responsible for leading and managing a mixed team of engineer/developers, ensuring the successful design, development, integration and test of engineering software and hardware tools. This position will be expected to guide the team in the development and use of these tools they create and will ultimately help deliver aircraft designs and guidance across all phases of the design cycle; from concept to delivery, ensuring safety, performance, and compliance with industry standards. This role will report to the Tools and Support Engineering Manager, helping to oversee the entire stack of hardware and software used within the Flight Technologies department.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervise and mentor a mixed team of Aero, Performance, CFD, GNC and development engineers, providing guidance, support, and technical expertise for all GA-ASI, production aircraft systems.

  • Supervise development and maintenance of tools for projects at a range of design maturity, with an emphasis on supporting programs of record.

  • Oversee the entire software development lifecycle for these tools, from requirements gathering and design to implementation, testing and maintenance.

  • Assign tasks, set goals, and track progress to meet project deadlines while working in an agile software development environment.

  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, encouraging the adoption of best practices and new technologies.

  • Complete bids and work scope for potential software and hardware projects, taking ownership during the bid, proposal and execution phases.

  • Ensure that tools and processes comply with industry standards, regulations, and safety requirements.

  • Take part in cross-disciplinary collaboration creating tools that meet the requirements of the users and their customers.

  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including project engineering, systems engineering, aerodynamics, performance, CFD and software engineering.

  • Recruit, hire, retain, and develop engineers with necessary skill-sets to support tool development projects.

  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of engineering software roadmaps, designs, specifications, and test plans.

Job Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; nine or more years of experience with a bachelors degree, seven or more years of experience with a masters degree, or four or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.

  • Proven experience in a leadership or management role.

  • Significant experience in aerodynamics, flight performance, GNC, CFD or other flight science field.

  • In-depth knowledge of aviation regulations and standards.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Project and task management experience.

  • Occasional travel to the company flight test facilities is required.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Leadership experience with a track record of successfully managing and developing high performing teams

  • Experience with GA-ASI aircraft, specifically MQ-1C, MQ-9 and MQ-20.

  • Experience with various aircraft types, including both unmanned and manned fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft.

  • Familiarity with advanced software development concepts, agile software methods, software version management (SVN or GIT), continuous integration and continuous development platforms and methodologies.

  • Code development experience, example languages include C, C++, Java, Python, Matlab

  • Familiarity with Model-Based Design and simulation tools.
