Job summary:

Performs patient care activities and non-professional services. These include addressing the

personal, physical and emotional needs of the neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, or geriatric patient

and family. Practice must be consistent with the philosophy, goals, policies and procedures of the

Nursing Department and Medical Center administration. Population served based on scope of services

in the department.

Essential Responsibilities

  1. Assists in the delivery of patient care by performing, specific patient care tasks per scope of

service and as directed by the Registered Nurse.

  1. Assists with admissions, transfers, discharges and transport of patients.

  2. Obtains and records Temperature, Pulse, Respirations, Blood Pressure, Oxygen saturation,

weights, and Blood Glucose testing. Reports abnormalities and condition changes to primary

nurse promptly.

  1. Demonstrates competence in advanced skills to include, but not limited to: oral suctioning,

enemas (no Fleets enemas), clean dressings after a RN assessment, tube feeding set-up, external

catheter (condom catheter), post-mortem care and suction canister set-up.

  1. Communicates effectively and frequently with health care team members to share information

and solve problems in a positive and result-oriented manner both verbally and electronically.

a. Documents legibly on all hospital forms using standardized abbreviations.

b. Gets patient report from the RN and off-going PCT at the beginning of the shift. Gives

end-of-shift report to the primary nurse and oncoming PCT at the end of the shift.

c. Participates in walking rounds with the oncoming and off going PCT at shift change

  1. Provides personalized care to patients and families. Identifies and documents special needs on

the patient rounding sheet.

  1. Utilizes available educational materials, programs, nursing literature and resource personnel for

career development and attends mandatory in-services to maintain unit competencies.

  1. Utilizes material, equipment and time in a safe, therapeutic and cost effective manner.

  2. Assists with appropriate tasks in all code situations (i.e. CPR, obtaining equipment, etc.) under

the direction of the Code Blue Team.

  1. Adheres to Organizational infection control practices and policies and to established safety and

security policies, including using two (2) identifiers whenever taking blood samples or

performing any procedure.

  1. Assists with maintaining the general cleanliness and appearance of areas on the unit, including,

but not limited to:

a. Cleans treatment rooms, showers, commodes and IV poles after use.

b. Cleans kitchens (refrigerators, ice machines, sinks, counters) as assigned.

c. Cleans counters and empties trash in nursing station as requested.

d. Cleans other areas such as storage areas, linen rooms, staff lounge as requested.

e. Cleans, restocks and maintains patient care supplies.

  1. Maintain and Model REACH Values (Respect, Excellence, Accountability, Compassion, Honor).

  2. Demonstrates regular, reliable and predictable attendance.

  3. Performs other duties as required.

Education and Experience Requirements:

• High school diploma or GED.

• AHA BLS provider certification course required within 90 days from date of hire.

• Minimum of three (3) months experience as a PCT or currently in a junior semester of an

Associates or Bachelor’s nursing program.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Requirements:

• General knowledge of high school subject matter including sciences, simple medical procedures

/ terminology, and office equipment.

License, Registration, or Certification Requirements:

• BLS certification is required 90 days’ from date of hire

Working Conditions:

Manual: significant manual skills/motor coord & finger dexterity

Occupational: Significant occupational risk

Physical Effort: Very Heavy effort. May exert up to 50 lbs. force

Physical Environment: Significant exposure to dirt, odors, noise, human waste, etc.
